The Rosie or PAH?

Hi,
Just moved to Bishops Stortford and am 8 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I gave birth to DS in America, so new to NHS births!
Need to choose between The Rosie in Csmbridge and PAH in Harlow. Any recommendations? Experiences? My first son was 3 weeks early, although tried to come 7 weeks early and I was on bed rest those last few weeks. Need somewhere I can trust if this baby comes early too.
Any advice would be great.

Are you American and do you have insurance? If so go to London and go private. You will have a shock when you have care under the NHS compared with an American hospital. I live in your area and myself and a lot of my girlfriends went to the Portland and it was wonderful. Like most NHS maternity services it is very sketchy around here. I know of 3 mums who ended up delivering at home unplanned because Harlow would not admit them. I have heard mixed reports about Cambridge but most opt for this as they think it is posher to have your baby in Cambridge over Harlow.

No experience of these hospitals as I fled Essex at an early age, but I'd tend to agree with fgr that NHS care is patchy wherever you go.

You might be lucky and get a great experience or it might be awful. I've had a home birth since and that was great - you get two midwives to yourself. Is that an option?

Oh sorry Rooneymama, I didnt mean to offend. It is the attitude around here unfortunately and it is a bit pathetic.

If homebirth is something you might be interested in then im told Harlow are great for that!

I have had two DSs in Rosie - neither we're straight forward births, and I was very well looked after. You couldn't pay me to try a home birth!

I have heard good things about PAH, but they seem to close to new admissions much more often than Rosie.

No, I am English, but spent 4 years in America where I had DS. All seems so different compared to service in America. Not really spent any time in hospitals in England, luckily, so think it will be new experience.Read mixed reviews on both hospitals so trying to make decision.

Definately The Rosie. I had both DCs there and the care is superb.

The Rosie has brand new maternity facilities that opened this summer. Looked great - mostly private rooms. And then I had to go and move to Oxford!

I think if you are in any way 'high risk' then you should choose the Rosie. It's the specialist neonatal centre for the east of england, whereas PAH is a (fairly mediocre) local hospital.

You are closer to PAH distance wise and I've not heard a bad word said about PAH from friends who've given birth there, most of the labour ward has had a revamp recently. Not heard much about the Rosie, as the vast majority chose PAH.

If high risk I would chose Rosie

I live near Stortford and had DD1 at PAH and will be having DC2 there as well (27 weeks pg). I have nothing but praise for the hospital - DD was born in the birthing unit which was great then and has since been improved. Friends also rave about the Rosie but I feel that poor PAH is often given a hard time for the simple crime of being in Harlow!

I had DD at the Rosie, induced at 38 weeks but pretty straightforward, and they were fab. I'm back for another in March. A friend had hers at 25 weeks earlier in the year and the Rosie NICU and SCBU were amazing and the baby's doing brilliantly.

I had DD in 2008 at PAH and couldn't speak more highly pf the service. in fact I wrote and thanked them afterwards. I was two weeks overdue so was induced , very supportive midwives. I ended up with an Emcs but recall laughing and joking with the theatre team whilst they made sure the spinal block worked. I also remember the kindness of a nursing assistant who took DD for a couple of hours during the night so I could sleep - the kindness of a stranger. I'm now expecting DC2 and weve since moved to Cambridgeshire so also considering the Rosie but it does seem to get mixed reviews.

I don't know anything about PAH, had my two at the Rosie before they had the new areas. Dd was in NiCU and SCBU, DS was out after one night.
The new suites look amazing though.
Can you go and look round both of them?
