Had an attempted sweep today, but my cervix is still too high. Midwife said that she could only fit 1 finger into my cervix.

Went 10 days over last time and ended up being induced.

Does anyone have any positive stories about going into labour spontaneously? Really need to be cheered up.

Have another sweep booked for Monday. Been told they will give me an induction date then as well. This is usually 2 weeks +, 2 weeks over puts me on xmas eve. Really want to be home for xmas for dd.

I was 11 days over when I went into labour.

At 10 days over, the consultant wanted to book me in for induction at 12 days overdue but I refused so they were going to monitor me daily from then.

I asked my midwife to give me a sweep at 10 days over - she could get one finger in and wiggle it but not two (it was the first sweep I had as I refused them before that) and 24 hours later I was pushing my DS out!

If you don't want to be induced you don't have to. I know you want to be home for Christmas but DC will come when they are ready and a natural birth is better than being induced (so I've heard, as this is my first!)

It is not at all unusual to have an unfavourable cervix at this point. You're not ready! It can change in 24hrs. Have another sweep as offered because it does increase your chance of spon lab before 40+14.

Its more than likely the baby will be here by 25th.

Thankyou, this is just what I needed to hear. Was beginning to feel quite negative and these responses have helped me focus on the positives.

Have just had some reflexology so hopefully that will help

Pickle I am 40 +3 I have had 3 sweeps so far 38 and 39 weeks and 1 on Monday and none have worked. I have been told by the mw that induction date would be christmas eve but the consultant has told me I can refuse it.
I have 3 other dc so really don't want to be away from them over christmas. All 3 dc have been 2 weeks late dc 1 was induction dc 2&3 were looking like been inductions and I went into labour naturally on the 13th day so still really late.

With each one it looked like I would not labour naturally but I got there in the end so it does happen.
Fx for us both.

pickle my MW tried to do a sweep last week at 40+3 an she couldn't reach my cervix at all. I was utterly despondent especially as it is my first baby and I come from a long line of women who've had caesareans as inductions in my family.

I was booked for another sweep at 41+0 but I didn't need it cos I went into labour on Friday last week at 40+6 and gave birth on Saturday morning after a straightforward vaginal delivery of our beautiful bouncing baby boy, 9 lbs 4 oz :-)

It can happen: try to relax and have faith. And an expensive glass of dessert wine...I am sure that's what worked for me the night I went into labour! Xx
