URGENT advice needed

Hi, in currently in hospital being induced

They have basically forced me to have a catheter which I do not want - they put me under so much pressure I had to give in

It really hurts. It's irritating me and makes me feel like I want to pee. Or cry

Can I insist they take it out???

Yes you can insist but ask what risks/alternatives there are first! Good luck for the arrival of your baby!

yes ask them to take it out if it hurts

why do you need a catheter? surely that means you can't move around??

I have pre eclampsia and they need to monitors kidney output. But I've told then I'll sit on a bed pan :(

you poor thing - must be worrying...

well, if they need to monitor your kidneys, then maybe it is necessary - but you shouldn't be in pain with it

can they reinsert it or something?

hope everything goes OK - just think of the gorgeous baby you are going to be holding in a few hours

I had a very painful catheter when in labour with DS. It turned out they'd used a latex one despite my notes being covered with latex allergy stickers. May be worth checking if that is your issue?

Oh dated sorry to hear they are being shit. I agree ask if the catheter is the only way right now and explain how much it hurts. I'm so sorry this is happening.

Do you have anyone with you? If so get them talking for you that's their job if not. Ask why you need it, what alternatives there are, what are the risks, and if you can have it out and review it again in an hour.

Don't be scared. If you feel like they are not listening to you ask if you can speak to someone else.

Dated, how severe is your pre-eclampsia? It must be horrible for you, but they honestly wouldn't catheterise unless there was a sound reason. Women with PE can get very ill, so they will be wanting to protect you by being totally aware of how well you are while they induce you.

dated I had a painful catheter when induced (for my epidural) ... tell them that it hurts!! I had to have it taken out and put back in (by someone better!) There may be some pain relief you can have as well. I know it's awful though , hope it's going better now.

Hiya dated,

I had pre-eclampsia and didn't have a catheter until my emerge c sec. As long as you can sit on a bed pan you can insist that they take it out and if you need a c sec you can have it put in then.

Are you currently being induced? I had severe pre-eclampsia and was induced initially without a catheter.

it shouldnt hurt, i was v worried about catheta when had to have one but it didnt hurt at all whilst or coming out.

dated thinking about you, I'm sure it shouldn't be hurting please kick up as much of a fuss as you need to get them to listen to you. Hope you're all done now and safely recovering!

i just had three catheters in and out ( and only 18 weeks grr). Anyhoo, i've done a lot of reading and one of the reasons they can hurt is if they've not been put in fully before being inflated.

if you can pee other ways they no one can force you to have it. they may say risk of infection of taking it out and doing it again, but if it's unbearable then you can't put up with that. there's risk of infection with many things to do with birth and waterworks and you can always have antibiotics if you get a UTI. i just did.

I had a catheter when I was induced it wasn't too uncomfortable, if it is causing you pain or discomfort can you ask them to put it in again? Or like other people have said perhaps request another type that is less irritable (the words they will prob use not you ;)).
How far along in the induction are you? I didn't get the catheter until I was well under way which took 3 days.
I hope you are OK inductions can be hard (not always) but anyway they can make this easier on you they should be helping.

Hi all, thank you all for your kind messages. It turned out that I had hellp syndrome and my kidneys were failing.

It was the worst experience of my life. I am just thankful for my ds.

Glad to hear you are recovering. I suspected you may have had HELLP as they were so insistent. Well done!
