Post birth vaginal itching

I gave birth 8 days ago. Over the last 24 hours I have had an intense external vaginal itch. I am sure it is part of the healing process - I was stitched after tearing. Can anyone recommend a solution? Is there anything I could apply to reduce the itching?

Sit on something ice cold.

You could try a bath with a few drops of lavender oil, or lavender and tea tree if you have it. Supposed to help with healing: not sure if it does but it felt very soothing to me.

Congratulations on your new arrival! Stitches can itch as they heal. Did you shave/ wax before, the regrowth can itch. So can dry skin / mucosa or dried blood. Are you still bleeding? Could it be the brand of pad you are using? Try using aqueous cream to wash then apply liberally after, though not to any stitches. You can use ky to lubricate further inside too, it's very cooling and comforting.

I had this and I cleaned down there with some teatree oil (we only have a shower so couldn't sit in it). I put a few drops in a cup of water and wiped myself gently with it.

It was on midwife advise and it really did help

Another possibility could be thrush or a small infection. Definitely try all of the above but if no relief speak to your midwife/gp/pharmacy. I had thrush after 2 courses of antibiotics following the birth of my DS and it felt different to 'normal' thrush due to the stiches and swelling.

Thank you folks. I added tea tree oil to the bath and changed the type of pad. Much relief Grin

Thanks again for the suggestions. Much appreciated.

I was given more advice with this. Lube. Wow. What a difference.

New skin is super sensitive. The discharge from the vagina is full of enzymes which can be very irritant. Vaseline! simple and effective.

If still bad in a few days, see GP, you could have thrush or an infection. I had thrush 'down there' about 2 weeks after DD.
