If baby in normal position do you still mainly feel contractions in your back?

My first dd was back to back until turning just before starting pushing. I can't remember feeling contractions in my tummy, just agony in my back. I'm pregnant again & am wondering what level of pain tolerance I've got as I'd like to try a home birth this time as hospital experience was v traumatic last time.

If there's anyone who has had normal labour & back to back labour, can you confirm if contractions are similarly pain level & felt mostly in your back both times?

I've only had a normal labour, but yes, almost all the pain was in my back. Some period style cramps but really it was the back and I think this is fairly common.

I've only had two normal labours, but the contractions/pains were very different to each other. With DC2 I felt stabbing pains down through my cervix. DC1 was all period-type cramping.

Cant help you on diff in two labours but five years after her birth - going through my birth notes it transpires my DD was bloody back to bloody back. I remeber being astonished and amazed at the pain in my lower back and mentioning this and not once was I told - or was it suggested she was back to back.

So I have been bleating about the pain and it was because she was back to back. I realy thought my spine was being damaged for life and after for a good two years had lower back aches and problems.

Oh dear I was hoping to hear that back to back labour gives awful contractions in your back but that normal ones are just twinges in your tummy......a girl can dream!!

Sorry, maybe not what you want to hear but I had a back to back labour first time and felt all contractions in my back, not a thing round the front. My second was the right way round and again all my pain was in my back, I didn't feel any contractions in my tummy, and even the monitor in the hospital wasn't picking up contractions, even when I was 10cm and pushing! Second was definitely more manageable though, and managed without any pain relief at all.

I did, normal position but agony in my back, and nowhere else

DS was OA and although I had a dull pain in my back, my cx were all in the front on my bump.

toldmywrath · 08/09/2012 19:05

My first was back to back & absolutely sheer agony in the back-like a continuous labour pain, no respite at all-I didn't expect it to be so bad (and no one said until way afterwards that it was back to back & that's why I was unable to time contractions-unable to time cos no gaps in the pain) Luckily (!) an extremely quick delivery. Gas &air only.
Subsequent children were not back to back & were what you would call text book-able to time contractions, the pains were out front with minor period like back pain. No pain relief apart from a little bit of gas &air with the pushing bit. Much much better and also quick (less than 5hours on all occasions)
Good luck leannac-I'm sure things will be better second time around

I've only had a normal labour and didn't feel anything in my back at all; all in front like severe period pains.

Minty82 · 08/09/2012 19:09

Well, VERY severe period pains - not pretending it was fun, but definitely manageable and all in that area.

leannac · 08/09/2012 19:43

This is reassuring. Thank you!

Good luck!

Need more reassurance? My mum gave birth to 4 babies (not all at the same time) ALL of us were posterior (I was actually born posterior, so didn't move round at all), and she didn't have drugs with any of us. This was in the 1980s. I don't think she had easy labours (24 hours with me), but she did it Grin Proud of her actually. She's deffo my birthing role model.

BuntyCollocks · 09/09/2012 06:57

DS was back to back, and I had no back pain, just awful period like cramps.

JennerOSity · 09/09/2012 07:00

Not had a b2b labour but my anterior baby was all tummy cramps feelings. Pretty manageable tbh, :)

leannac · 09/09/2012 07:04

I'm hoping for a labour without the terrible back contractions this time as after my last back to back labour my back seems to be more susceptible to aches & pains anyway so heaven knows what back contractions would feel like again on top of the pretty much constant niggle or ache!
