odd question about epidurals for c-sections

my ds is now 2 but i still have a question from when i gave birth, which got misunderstood at the time and i'd love to get peoples own experiences/ knowledge on:

  • did anyone else get pain actually from the epidural/ spinal anaesthetic? all over particularly limbs? like nerve pain/ pins and needles where someone literally was scraping and stabbing pins and knives in me (not the i've sat on my foot too long variety!). Maybe more like shooting pains down my body and legs/ arms?

i was in agony and asked at the time but no one would listen to me long enough to understand i didn't mean the epidural hadn't worked, or pain around the injection site, but a different pain.

I still wonder what that was and as was left with loads of complications, i guess it does play on my mind.

NB to anyone pregnant and now terrified, i had a genetic condition which made itself known around the same time and complications were from having this undiagnosed through pregnancy, birth and post natal... so don't worry!

but i really want to know, does anyone else know what this pain was? anyone else experienced it???

i've googled it and nothing on it, just stuff about the injection itself hurting or an awful headaches, or checking the anaesthetic has taken effect.

I remember thinking that maybe an epidural had the same principle as tens machines but on a far bigger scale, i.e. distracts you from the other pain you are trying to get rid of!

Yes - I had this for a few weeks after my CS. Had epidural and possibly a spinal too (not sure now tbh as epidural was wearing off before the CS was decided upon)
It was like an electric shock up and down my spine and into my legs. Really sudden, not incredibly painful but quite shocking and definitely had to stop moving, breathe deeply and sit down. Would come on very suddenly while doing something v normal like getting dressed, last for about 10 seconds and then go.
Was quite scared that it would happen if I had DD in my arms. I was very careful not to drive until after 6 weeks but I think it ceased completely within 2/3 weeks, though the nerves at the top of one thigh were a bit tingly for a while.
Midwife/health visitor said that it was possibly just a little nerve damage and would sort itself out, which it did.
Is your experience similar or much more severe?

Well I had it actually while the c section was going on rather than after, which was why I was do weirded out by it. Then they partially dislocated my hip when moving me with numb legs, & then the next few weeks were a blur so I can't remember... Feel like I have a clue on my detective route with the idea of nerve damage - thank you!
