Hi im 34 weeks pregnant, each time my dh and i have sex I get short stabbing pains, backache and intense pressure down below.Sometimes this can last as long as a day or two but on and off. Is this contractions and if so is there a possibility that if we keep having sex that it will turn into real active labour? Just wondering because I want to keep my lil one cooking for as long as I can!!

There's an obvious remedy for this one - just don't do it!

it's probably braxton hicks

I had the same last weekend - intense pressure, strong tightenings. It went on for about 12 hours afterwards. I don't think it will turn into real labour unless you're ready, but it freaked me out enough to decide to abstain for a few weeks till I'm at least 37 weeks!

That said at 39 weeks with my last pg, sex brought on weak irregular contractions that died off eventually. Dd didn't arrive for another week, though I was already 4-5 cm dilated once I was examined!

Orgasms and sex can set off mini contractions (not the real thing) it's just hormonal and should be nothing to worry about.

There are prostaglandins in sperm (semen? Not sure which), which is why they recommend sex at full term to bring on labour but you won't go into labour until your baby is ready to arrive.

If you're worried talk to your MW or GP.

Sounds normal. Its the prostaglandins in the sperm causing Braxton Hicks. I think you just get more sensitive to them the more babies you've had, If you start to feel painful tightenings let a mw know.

I don't think there's any need to stop having sex, unless you want to.

Thanks guys, the pressure and tightening i feel isnt painful so youre probably right, just braxton hicks but maybe ill just lay off the sex for a while! Gonna b hard though, libido has somewhat increased lately for some reason!! Thanks again, youve put my mind at rest :)
