I have been swept at 38 weeks and nothing at all feels like it has happened...i know it can take up to 48 hours but I'm not feeling very hopeful. I live in Dubai so it is normal to do an earlier sweep. The Dr has told me throughout my late pregnancy that the baby is so low down (i had earlier contractions) that she would be an early baby. The sweep was done a/ because i am 2cm b/ the dr is going on holiday and wants to deliver me before she goes.
i just don't think in hindsight it was needed and also do they have any idea in reality of a baby is going to come early or not?
Im a bit fed up!!!!

A sweep does not have much effect if you are not on the brink of labour?that's why we wait till at least 40 weeks in the uK. It does no harm though.

As a midwife of 23 yrs, I am not much good at predicting which babies will come before 40 weeks and which will not. I doubt your doctor is any better.

Thank you!!
She was insistent on doing it because she wants me to deliver before the 19th but i just feel it was a waste of time. To add onto this, yesterday, she said 'well you may go to full term' after telling me i would be lucky to get to 34/36 and now 38 weeks....i know its better for the baby to stay in for as long as possible but i feel a little like i have been misinformed...just want to have the baby!!!!!

I hate this expectation of early birth where there is no relevant complication. It makes you feel that something is wrong if you go over 40 weeks. Normal pregnancy is 37-42 weeks, with most coming 39-41. If you wait for spontaneous labour, where all is well, you are much more likely to have a straightforward birth with a well baby.Do not allow anyone to talk you into early IOL for their own agenda. It often leads to an avoidable cs. Sweeps are safe but if you are not ready to labour have no proven worth.

I had 2 sweeps with dd and neither worked and was eventually induced at 40+5 (had gestational diabetes so they didnt want me going on longer). DD ended up only 7lb 11oz so not big anyway!

Hmm, my DD was very low down, and u had a sweep after 40 weeks. She was 2 weeks late, even with induction.

Maybe you were misinformed Sad
