Can I Go Into Labour With No Early Symptoms?

Hi. I'm 39+4 with DC3. With both previous DC I went ten days overdue and was then induced-no biggie, pessary then straight-forward natural deliveries.
I had absolutely no signs of impending labour with first two DC. No niggles, twinges, cramps etc. No BH even-well, that I could tell of. Had a show with DC2, but then nothing else...
I'm happy enough to wait to be induced again this time, but I was just wondering if anyone has ever gone into labour naturally with no "pre" symptoms? So no contractions, shows or waters going, and then suddenly things just started. I wonder everyday/night if things are going to happen, am I fooling myself? Can things just start with no warning signs?
Thanks.

Did with DS. Nothing, then ctx started at 3.30am.

I must be having a dim moment because I don't understand your question. How could labour start without you having any contractions?

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 04/08/2012 23:04

I went straight to contractions with no twinges, waters breaking etc.
Only sign the night before DS was a huge appetite for particular greek meal!

Sorry RillaBlythe. What I mean is most people seem to have contractions, niggles, water going, shows, BHs over a few days, weeks or even a day, and then labour "kicks off". Does it always have to be this way, or can it just start, boom, straight away?
'Cos I'm having nada but still hoping! Grin

I didn't have any warning with dc1, waters went suddenly then full blown contractions straightaway. Good luck, I hope you don't have to wait much longer Grin

Thanks Ladies. You have given me hope. Not that I mind being induced as it went well both times before. But would be nice maybe to just start myself too. Here's hoping!

I had none with DD. No show, no mucous plug, no Braxton-Hicks. Woke up with back pain at 5am, mild cx started 7am, waters broke 1pm, she was born at 10.45pm.

Fingers crossed for you :)

OyOfMidWorld · 05/08/2012 22:22

With DS1 I was at my Brother in Law's birthday party until midnight playing board games and listening to music, came home and waters started going with a show too. Contractions started at 3am and he was born at 11:15.

OyOfMidWorld · 05/08/2012 22:25

Forgot to say, I had no signs or symptoms of labour prior to this. The family who had been at the party were all so shocked to get the news the next day.

GnocchiNineDoors · 05/08/2012 22:26

I had no signs. Cxns started at 3am 3mins apart and a minute long.

Vix07 · 05/08/2012 22:40

Hope this happens for me but my best pal (after a v troubled first labour)had her 2nd in1/2 hr and barely got into the ward from the first twinges, straight into car towards hospital, no drugs etc all done 30 or 40 mins later. have had this story every time I meet her now till my 1st due this winter so really hope it happens like that for me (and you too x)

Valpollicella · 05/08/2012 22:43

I had no symptoms whatsoever. Suddenly got a bad period type pain and tgat was it. Went from 0 to every 5 mins with cx at the very start. Ds born about 5 hours later!

woopsidaisy · 05/08/2012 22:46

I'm going to be waking at 3am every night now to see if anything happening! Thanks, Ladies, going to start with the positive vibes!

Its definitely possible. My DD was born at 38+6. I had nothing right up until the day she was born and in fact I only phoned MW 3 hours before she was born as I was out of the blue getting these odd stomach pains!

notcitrus · 05/08/2012 23:36

I had my first braxton hicks a couple hours before regular contractions happened with ds. With dd only sign was SPD worsening, in rather intermittent fashion, and had got to every 10 min before it occurred to me this might actually be labour...

mayhew · 06/08/2012 15:52

Indeed. Why do you think there are all those stories of surprise out of hospital births? And don't get me started on the ones who didn't even realise they were pregnant?..

The latent phase stuff still goes on but with some (lucky?) women its so mild they are unaware of it until active labour. And quite a lot of dilation happens in latent phase for some people. I once met a woman on xmas eve who came into triage because she felt a strange pelvic pressure: 9cm!
