Don't do it, it's not a safe option. pregnancy.about.com/od/induction/a/castoroil.htm

Ambrosius · 28/06/2012 15:41

Don't do it, labour is painful and humiliating enough without shitting yourself incessantly and puking everywhere.
Have you had a sweep, that got me going.

agoodman · 28/06/2012 15:45

no my consultant wont sweep me or induce me because im having a vbac. but if i go over due by so many days im told ill have a c section again :-( so im really desperate for baby to come asap

No no no no no no noooooooo!

TheGruffalosbitch · 28/06/2012 15:49

Having a vbac is the reason u should be having a sweep. My consultant gave me sweeps from 37 weeks to give me the best chance into going into labour naturally

Thumbwitch · 28/06/2012 15:51

Different consultant? Second opinion? Ask a MW to do the sweep?

agoodman · 28/06/2012 16:06

i asked my midwife at 37 weeks she wouldnt do it. so went to see my consultant at 38 weeks but somone else was filling in for her because she was over booked apparently and i felt a bit shoved in and pushed out. i dont have any appointments now until Due date where she said they will examine me and see how things are going but thats it..
id ask for a different consultant or a midwife but can take up to 3 weeks to get an appointment. they are terrible here.
i never seen my midwife from 16 weeks till 28 weeks because i couldnt get appointment. then she was on holiday! they only have one mw at my doctors and shes only in on a friday.. nightmare

My mum took castor oil with me ! And it worked but as others have sed it's got bad side effects and not safe to do plus it tastes foul that would prob make u sick !

blackteaplease · 28/06/2012 17:12

Don't do it. How many weeks are you now? My mw said at my hospital they will offer sweeps and break waters to bring on labour for vbac but won't give induction via a drip. Can you get a second.opinion?

monkeypuzzeltree · 28/06/2012 17:34

That's odd, friend of mine had 3 sweeps before she went into labour for vbac, starting at 38 weeks! New opinion required me thinks.

wasabipeanut · 28/06/2012 17:43

As someone who turns into an utter witch at the end of pregnancy I do sympathise. However, no matter how desperate I've never done castor oil. Labour in a toilet with the trots is not an appealing prospect.

Try evening primrose oil (caps as close to cervix as you can reach before bedtime) and also take orally. Also try massage with jasmine oil if you can tolerate the sickly smell! These 2 have got me going for 2 c vbacs now and both were pretty quick labours.

phunkiephedora · 28/06/2012 18:18

I was offered twice weekly sweeps from 39-42 weeks before my planned VBAC, failing which they will break my waters on Monday before C-section on Tues. Get a second opinion.
Don't do the castor oil!!!

agoodman · 28/06/2012 20:15

thanks girls i didnt know i should be offered sweeps. will be phoning hospital tomorow and see what they can do. ill give the castor oil a miss xx

Here is a summary of studies on castor oil summaries.cochrane.org/CD003099/castor-oil-bath-andor-enema-for-cervical-priming-and-induction-of-labour
It suggests a lack of research but also a lack of any effect.
I tried it with my last pregnancy and it gave me the shits but didn't bring on labour. Not worth it in my opinion. I'm going to try wine this time Grin.

agoodman · 29/06/2012 11:14

thanks for that. wine you say?! now theres a method i could try lol maybe have anice hot bath tonight and a wee glass of red! x
