I have been there recently as a HypnoBirthing practitioner. My strong preference would be for the birthing centre. Everyone of the parents I have worked with who have gone to the Birthing Centre have had an excellent experience and had no need for pain-relief. It is a lovely home from home.

The labour ward is less calming/more medical looking but my recent experience has been that the staff have all been very lovely.

Mayday (or Croydon University Hospital as it's offically known as now) has had a bad reputation but I genuinely think it has improved. Also I think it's worth noting that people are generally 8 times more likely to talk about a poor experience than a good experience so the negative is somewhat amplified. I'm sure most matenity units have a negative stories told about them.

Hi there - I gave birth to DD at Mayday back in March, and was very pleased with the standard of care all around. I spent considerable time on the Hope ward (Antenatal) and had an induction at 38 weeks on the Labour ward. Was on Mary ward (postnatal) a week after birth as well. No complaints - midwives, obstetricians and pediatricians all lovely. Would have loved to use the birth centre but it wasn't an option for me with the induction.

Only downside is that it is very, very busy - obviously staff are stretched but I would imagine this to be the case with most inner city hospitals these days.

Very pleased to read such positive comments about our maternity services from people who have used the centre recently. I have let the maternity team know.
