... does anyone elses think that oral sex is a complete myth cooked up by men? If it were true, why do hospitals give you pessaries rather than tablets?

Oral sex on women by men or on men by women?

SoupDragon · 26/02/2006 17:12

On men by women. The claim being that whatever the "active ingredient" in sperm is that kickstarts labour is better ingested rather than, er, the more usual route

think the other way round might be more helpful tbh.

tuppenceworth · 26/02/2006 20:02

Ok, here's the medical explaination as to why that wouldn't work.

Prostoglandin, the hormone in the pessary which is inserted vaginally to induce labour, if introduced orally would be annihilated by the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. Plus it would have to be ingested in large quantities, ie a couple of bucketloads of semen, for it to be absorbed by the placenta. Then there's the small matter of it not being passed on to the baby via the placenta as it's not needed to sustain or develop life, as the placenta acts as a filter for anything we ingest.

Please tell your partner that this is NOT an excuse for you to give him a blow job and swallow the evidence. Do suggest, however, that if he gives you oral sex then he will have a superior acoustical advantage and the baby will recognise his voice when it's born!

I'm 39+2 and desperate but not that desperate! Dh read SDs original post over my shoulder and I turned round to find him grinning from ear to ear. I have just read him tuppenceworth's reply and he looks heartbroken!

tuppenceworth · 26/02/2006 20:08

Sorry anchovies' husband!

Guess you'll just have to stick to repaying the favour!

Don't forget the acoustical advantage though - the baby will bond with you more if it's familiar with your voice, and there's no better way than, well, you know!!

(Hope this helps anchovies!)

MerlinsBeard · 26/02/2006 20:10

i thought it was orgasms that encouraged the uterus start to contract and something to do with something in semen (lol @ my vagueness!)

tuppenceworth · 26/02/2006 20:13

Prostoglandin in semen, oxytocin released when you orgasm. Also in the hormone in the drip when you're being 'managed' in early labour.

So if you have sex and you orgasm, you're away!!!

anchovies · 26/02/2006 20:15

Well I'm now promoting orgasms with an acoustical advantage. It just gets better (for me anyway!!)
