I had my beautiful girl on Tuesday night :o) The bleeding has slowed lots but I had a big clot (about the circumference of an empty toilet roll) fall out in the shower this morning. Is this normal?

Congratulations! I bet you are enjoying the newborn cuddles.

I was told that clots of up to that size (sort of up to golf ball size) were normal, but if you are worried check with your midwife. If however, the bleeding starts to smell funny, you start to bleed a lot and soak pads in short periods of time, you get a temperature, pains etc I would get it checked out.

Clot bigger than 50p tell your MW. (hang on to the clot if you can bear too, MWs like to look)

I had one large-ish clot that had a liver like quality to it. That was it though, just back to bleeding afterwards. Unless you get any of the symptoms mentioned above I wouldn't worry. And congratulations :)

Congratulation.

I had about one clot this size, so I called the maternity ward as instructed, it was just after I got home and the community midwife wasn't due till next morning, they didn't seem overly bothered, but wanted to know if I had lots more or if there was a smell, temperature, pain etc. They said they would have been concerned if there had been any issues with the placenta, such as retaining, manual removal, PPH.

I had a clot about that size and I rang my midwife. She asked me some questions about pain, my bleeding, smell, temperature (maybe a couple of others that I've forgotten) but then told me not to worry as it all sounded normal and it is possible to sometimes have a big clot, but to phone back if anything changed.

Congratulations :)

I had a massive clot after DS was born (I described it as the size of a tangerine Shock). I rang the GP and he asked me questions, then decided I was probably ok. I was!

Probably worth ringing just to check and put your mind at rest.

I had a humungous clot - bigger than my hand, I know as I caught it, yuk. I kept it in tupperware and the mw's had a good rummage to check it was just clot and not placental tissue. They also told me to look out for fresh, flowing bleeding. I was totally fine, but it was very unnerving.

Either way, keep any eye on it and tell your mws.
