Waterbirth if induced?

Bananna1 · 01/05/2012 12:56

I was really hoping to labour and give birth in water, but with no baby still, am due to go to hospital tomorrow evening to be induced.

Do any of you know if being induced means you can no longer have a water birth? Really hope not!

I suspect the policy will vary from hospital to hospital but at mine which has an MLU & CLU, you are allowed to go into the MLU if labour can be started after 2 pessaries, which would mean a waterbirth would be an option.

If you have 3 or 4 pessaries or are on the drip then it's straight to the CLU with no option for a waterbirth.

Good Luck! Hope it all goes well for you however it happens.

It depends in the hospital. If you just have pessary or gel you can. If you are on a drip you can't where I have birth.

"Do any of you know if being induced means you can no longer have a water birth?"

It did at GWH, Swindon. Shame they didn't bother to tell me until after the induction had begun. Was over 8 years ago though, so may have changed.

Good luck x

yes, you can have a water birth.

i was told "we actively encourage you to use the pool. water is good for pain relief"

ps: you don't have to be induced if you don't want to.

(my dd was born at 40+16, the only intervention i had was a sweep at 40+14)

You can if you have a pessary, but not if you have a drip. I had a water birth after a pessary - it was FAB! Also - stanp your feet if they say you can't! I threatened to go home and have him in the bath if they wouldn't run me a pool!

Where I was you could only if your water hadn't been broken. But, once you were in they acted like they couldn't hear you and no one in to be induced was allowed one. I suspect you'll need to push hard (pardon the pun) to get one.

i did! i had a water birth for no 4, i had my waters broken (cant have the gel as i am allergic so they broke my waters with all 5 to kick start labour once over 42wks) and then labour started quite quickly, got in the pool and had him 40 mins later! it was great, even with his 10lb 13oz size!

i didnt have to push hard and with no 5 they put me IN the room with the birth pool as they knew i had had no 4 in the pool, as it was i ended up with the drip and that means no pool :( still had a lovely birth.

as far as i know at my hospital if you have the gel or your waters broken you can go in the pool as long as monitering shows baby is fine, no meconium in waters or you dont have a temp (with ds3 they didnt let me in as i had a slight temp and it was TINY temp, i did say i had a throat infection as did my elder 2 children but they wouldnt have it)

that should say they put me in the room iwth the birth pool to break my waters and do the induction.
