I had a sweep at 2pm on the Saturday, the midwife said my cervix was effaced and 3 cm dilated, and I went into labour at 6am on the Monday morning. Smile

36 hours and it was only 1cm open and not effaced.

I had sweep with 2nd & third & went into slow labour immediately with both. Good luckSmile

I'm on baby number 3 and had my third sweep this morning.

First two clearly didn't work and nothing so far from this one.

Will be induced on Sat if no luck so really hoping it's third time lucky.

None of my sweeps worked on either dc2 or dc3

Hello - I had 3 sweeps over a week when I was 41 weeks. Apparently i was already one cm dilated. None of the sweeps worked and the following week I was induced. I'll give them another go this time as being induced at 38weeks, but am also booked in for some reflexology and aromatherapy as really want to avoid being induced. My pal had sweeps with hers and both times went into labour within hours - everyone's different i guess.

DS1 - two sweeps between 41 and 42 weeks. Didn't work and I was induced. When the MW did them, it didn't look promising (cervix high and posterior, no dilation).

DS2 - one sweep at 40+5 (did nothing) and one at 41+4. After this one, I went into labour that evening. BUT, I was already 2cm dilated and fully effaced - who knows whether it speeded things up or I would have gone into labour anyway? I do think if your body is not at all ready it probably won't make any difference.

Had sweep at 3pm dd (2nd baby) was born at 10 hours later which was nice. By the time i'd got home from hospital contractions had started.

MrsGubbins · 27/04/2012 11:13

contractions started 2 hours after sweep, baby born 9 hours later, good luck!

with dd1 i was a week overdue when i arrived to have my sweep the midwife bluntly said to me i cant preform this sweep?? i was like why the hell not? she said because your already 2-3cm dilated and will probably have this baby tonight.........sure enough i gave birth that day at 10:56pm 12 hours after my failed sweep................am only 12 weeks with my second so hopefully ill sneeze this one out lol

I had a sweep on Tues and am still waiting; I take it that it didn't work.

A friend of mine is a midwife and she said there's a 20% chance of going into labour within 24 hours of having a sweep so there's really no guarantees that you'll go into labour following one, whether it's your first, second or whatever baby.

Hope you have your baby soon though! :)

On my second sweep, 41 plus 5, midwife was retiring that day, I was her last appointment ever so she said she was going to do it proper and make damn sure I wasn't induced... 4 hours later I was straight into back to back relentless contractions, 8cm dilated within 2 hours, dd born 3 hours later... good luck!

Sweep on monday, went into slow labour, contractions every 10 minutes, then he was born yesterday morning :D

GreenandBlacksAddict · 04/05/2012 21:48

Midwife had 1st attempt at sweep at 40 weeks today - only 1cm dilated and apparently not a sweep more of a tickle , so booked in for 2nd sweep at 41+2 - desperately hoping DS2 will come out before then as found sweep very painful and am feeling enormous now !
