Induction at 38 weeks anyone?, and did it work?

Friend is 38 weeks and has gone in for induction due to huge baby (is very small herself) and is suffering quite badly with SPD.

The baby is not engaged yet and I was wondering what the chances are of her having a 'normal' delivery. The consultant is already talking about a section tomorrow if she wants one.

I had an induction at 38wks with ds2. He too was predicted to be a large baby. I can't remember whether or not he was engaged etc but the induction worked well. Ds2 was born after a 6hr labour.

induced at 38 weeks for pre eclampsia. Examined and told I had unfavourable cervix and prepare for it not to work. had first lot of gel Monday night. Second lot Tuesday night, only had induction pains. third gel wednesday morning, waters broke at 3pm spontaneously, was told still unfavourable, look to be labouring for another 24 hrs then probably c-section, arrgh. Then dd was born at 5.26pm after nearly being born in the lift on way to delivery suite. My ds was born at term + 11 days and his head wasn't engaged. i had to bounce on the exercise ball!! he was born 6 hours later after alot of bouncing!! So yes took 2 days with dd but it worked. HTH

50/50 so far then . Tbh, I get the impression that the consulatant is happy to just crack on with a section without giving it a chance.

My friend isnt a pushover by any means, but when your in that position (1st baby as well), you just go with it dont you, assuming that everything is being done for the right reasons.

Oh, its private by the way.

if she doesn't want a c-section, tell her to have her 3 lots of gel. Hope all goes ok.

I wont see her until after the birth now. Its just bugging me a bit. I dont want her to feel crap about it all afterwards.

This has happened to 2 friends of mine. For one it worked brilliantly and the baby was born after an 8 hour labour, but the other never got beyond 2cm dilated after 48 hours of contractions and ended up with a C-section.

One in three inductions don't work anyway, and if your body's not ready to go, then the chances of it failing are higher. But it works for some people, so you never know...

I was induced at 37 weeks with dd2 (due to my health). The first induction didn't 'take' and I was induced again 2 days later, when I had gel at 6am, was 1cm at 11am and 3pm then 5cm at 5pm and she was born at 6.30. My cervix was retracted (??) and high at the 2nd induction and the midwives were all tutting and saying 'oooh you'll need a ceaser' and then she was born in 12 hours.
Both my others were early spontaneously so dunno if that had anything to do with it. Hope your friend gets on OK and has a gorgeous baby!

This is a subject close to my heart! I was induced at 38wks due to an antibody problem. It wasn't easy to say the least: I was induced 6 times from the Friday when I first went into hosp.until the Tuesday when I finally got to the delivery suite. It's not easy being induced. This was my 3rd baby & the hardest. They say they try induction up to 3 times & if it doesn't work you will have a section. But as I say, I was induced 6 times. It didn't work but I really wanted a natural delivery as my 2 others had been.Luckily I had a good consultant who agreed with me.Hence all the inductions but Baby wasn't ready & neither was I! Finally had to have my water manually broken, which at 38wks is a horrible experience. I won't go into the gorey details! Finally after going into hosp on the Fri. I had my DD on the Wednesday morning and all was well. I wish your friend the best of luck. Hopefully things will go smoothly for her. Everyone/every birth is individual.

Induced at 38 +3 for ds2. One tablet and then one membrane sweep, laboured in 1hr with one push. It was three hours with ds1 also induced at 41wks. For me it was great and second time around pretty much pain free Managed on entinox which is great. DS2 also delivered in corridor on way to labour ward. They didn't believe me when I said I needed to push. They did one minute later when out he popped.

Induced at 37 weeks, started with the pessary up, contractions came fast then given dia morphine(fantastic), then my dd1 became distressed and then it was lights out, put to sleep for a section. Woke up to meet my dd1(gorgeous). What a day!!
