When did you count your labour from?

I noticed on some threads people say their labour was 26 hours from when their waters broke?

Just wondering as I count it from when my contractions started.

from contractions starting here, as waters got broken just before delivery!

popsycalindisguise · 10/02/2006 20:23

which ever came first????

not sure
if from waters breaking, then my second was abotu 5 minutes

Latz · 10/02/2006 20:24

I counted from when contractions started although my waters broke 36 hours before that

pupuce · 10/02/2006 20:25

Depends what you want to count,...
You can say from 1st contraction
You can say from when contractions where regular
You can say when waters broke (if you had no contractions before)
You can say when you went to hospital/ contractions were every 3 to 5 mins
You can say when your notes said you were in established labour

It all means different things to different people

spursmum · 10/02/2006 20:25

From when contractions started here too.
14 hours from 1st contraction to birth exactly.

Nbg · 10/02/2006 20:26

From contractions.

My front waters broke IYSWIM but contractions didn't start for another 8 hours after that.

motherfunkerhunkermunker · 10/02/2006 20:26

Popsy, my second was five minutes too based on waters breaking! I count it from contractions starting. Counted DS1's from waters breaking though as contractions started a few minutes later. First time just under 12 hours, second time 8.25 hours.

mummytosteven · 10/02/2006 20:27

I count it from when I had regular contractions (i.e. 4 minutes apart), but I wasn't in established labour until several hours after this!

Cam · 10/02/2006 20:29

From first twinge

Labour 1 = 7 hours

Labour 2 = 22 hours

Surfermum · 10/02/2006 20:30

From the start. I had 1 minute contractions every 3 minutes from the start. I had to have my waters broken about 12 hours into the proceedings IIRC. 18 hours later dd appeared not a minute too soon.

popsycalindisguise · 10/02/2006 20:36

ok so maybe i am fast labour woman

ds1 from first twinge - around 5 hours
from waters breaking - around 3 and a hlf hours

ds1 - first twinge around 1 hour 20 mins
from waters breaking 5 minutes

BettySpaghetti · 10/02/2006 20:38

OMG if you count it from waters breaking then with DD it was about 2 days!

However, if you count it from when contractions started it was about 4 hrs. Similar story with DS only from contractions starting properly it was only 2hrs.

I never considered my waters breaking as labour as they weren't accompanied by contractions.

Spidermama · 10/02/2006 20:40

I always count mine from the first contraction which rendered me unable to do anything but manage the pain.

The MWs don't seem to agree with me on this, but I reckon I'm best placed to say when my labour started.

foundintranslation · 10/02/2006 20:55

I counted mine with ds from first contraction. My waters did not break on their own.

cece · 10/02/2006 20:57

from when I arrive in the labour room

SueW · 10/02/2006 21:08

Labour from first ctx to birth of DD = 29 hours 48 mins

Official length of labour = 20 h 48 mins

The 9 hours difference is between what midwives considered my pre-labour contractions and when I was said to be in established labour (i.e. 3-4 cm dilated although in my case went from 2cm-6cm in short space of time)

flutterbee · 10/02/2006 21:10

If it's from when waters broke then I was in labour for 2 and a half weeks

If from when the first contractions came then about 18 hours

Wallace · 10/02/2006 21:29

For my booking in appointment with this baby the midwife asked me how long my labours with ds and dd were. I didn't have a clue! There was no definate point when it started...more like a gradual worsening of Braxton Hicks contractions, getting progressively more painful

coppertop · 10/02/2006 21:39

It says on my notes for ds1 that labour lasted for 40 hours. My waters broke about 8hrs before that.

With ds2 my notes said that I was in labour for 6 hours. My waters broke about 5 hours before that.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 10/02/2006 21:49

I always wondered when people started 'counting the hours'!
When I was pg would over hear people saying things like 'oh, yes I was in labour for 36 hrs'
Had this image of her puffing and panting for a full 36 hrs lol.

I count mine from when contractions started, which was around 8am, then had a em cs at 7pm, so around 11 hrs. But I wonder how long would it have been if I had ds naturally!?

Hulababy · 10/02/2006 21:50

I had an induction, so if taken from first twingle - about 48 hours. I reality, as I only got to 2/3cm dilated, I never got to active labour at all, and they really struggled to even break my waters slightly.

Hulababy · 10/02/2006 21:51

twinge, not twingle!

MerlinsBeard · 10/02/2006 21:51

with ds1 i count from when the midwife camwe round to examine me after a show and some painful contractions. ds1 was born 3 hours later. i ended up having my waters broken

with ds2 i knew i was in labour when i woke up with excrutiating pain. 1 hour later ds2 was born!!
