Have my waters broken? (TMI)

Wow, I thought it would be easier to tell than this...

Background: I'm 40+4 today. Have had a few false contractions/strong Braxton-Hicks a few days ago, nothing since late Tue. Went in for a sweep yesterday but the baby's head was pushing the cervix so far back they couldn't reach it, not even enough to tell if I was dilated at all. I've also been having consistent problems with incontinence and not completely emptying my bladder, since way early in pregnancy.

So, this morning (after waking up really late Blush), after I went to the loo, I plopped down on the sofa and suddenly felt a gush. I went straight back to the loo, figuring I hadn't succeeded in emptying my bladder -- more wee came out, as typical. I changed my pad, but noticed that there seemed to be more liquid than I'd expect. But I had slept really late and maybe my bladder was really full.

Sat back down, after half an hour, felt more trickles. Went back to loo, had a lot more wee (and haven't had much to drink yet). Also noticed thick, clear mucus from vagina when wiping. Since then, I feel like I'm being a bit more incontinent than normal, and was recently outside hanging out the washing and coughed and kept getting gushes with each. But I've been having trouble with leaking wee with coughs -- even if I hold my pelvic floor tight.

I tried smelling the pad, but it is useless -- I have cats, and human wee just doesn't smell strong enough to me (I know as back in week 16 I was having a fluid-or-wee issue and actually weed on a pad to test, and couldn't smell urine).

Since then, it basically feels not so different from my incontinence issues, but just more so. And if the mucus was my plug, wouldn't that have come before the waters, not sort of in the middle? Is this my waters breaking or not?

Not sure...but sounds like you should go and get it checked out. Sorry. Afternoon in hospital not much fun but hooray if it means baby coming soon!

I second getting checked out - sounds like your waters could be leaking but it is probably best to give the maternity ward a quick ring as they will want you to go in and be checked.

Thanks! I phoned the MLU -- they said come in 6hr after I thought it started (which was like 11:30am) if nothing else has happened yet. They'll confirm or not waters and probably send me home again. They won't induce for 72 hrs if no problems apparent. So I guess now it's just a waiting game!

And I'm more sure it's waters: more and more keeps coming out.

Exciting Smile whether it's your waters or not you can't have too much longer to go. Good luck - hope this turns into a live birth feed I love those Grin

Sounds promising Arden, if it helps DC3 my waters started to go with a twang which woke me up at about 5am, slight trickle on standing so just thought it was wee due to pressure.

Went to the toilet had a wee got back in bed, only when I got up about an hour later I had another trickle and begun to suspect that my waters had gone. This went on throughout the day as it became obvious as I moved around or changed positions it just came out. I soaked loads of pads!

Have you looked at the shape of your bump? As when I was getting dressed I noticed a dent under my breast bone and it just looked oddly deflated! The midwife told me to save a pad and confirmed it when she arrived (planned homebirth).

It took a while for proper contractions to start (about 5pm)but each time I had a contraction more gushed out! Good luck!!! Grin

Interesting, morethemerrier - I thought my bump looked funny this morning, sort of like a flat bit before it started again.

This is turning out to be messy -- soaked two pads already! Off to the hospital in a few minutes (takes about 30 to get there), so we'll see. No contractions yet, but I hope it starts soon.

Update: definitely my waters. They hooked me up to a monitor to follow the baby's heart beat and my uterus. Baby is doing fine, and apparently I'm having "irregular tightenings" that I can't feel. Hooked up to the monitor I could almost match a sensation to the numbers increasing, but what I noticed more was that baby would kick and wiggle after each (and we'd lose the heartbeat and have to chase her around).

They sent me home with instructions to come back when I feel regular contractions. Otherwise I'll go in for another check tomorrow afternoon (and Sat, and induction on Sun if nothing yet). Hoping for some contractions soon!

Yay!

Good luck, hope things kicked off for you overnight, update when you get chance!
