Big babies.

Hi. Just wondering out of people who had extra growth Scans that suggested large babies, how accurate we're these? I've had 6 scans all showing large abdominal and head circumference. And fundal heights consistently measuring ahead. Very concerned about tearing/ episiotomy as I had a very difficult time healing from an episiotomy previously which effected my bowel. :/

I had about 5 growth scans and DD2 was 10lbs at 40+7 so in my case they were pretty accurate. Head circumference was average though.

I had a 2nd degree tear, but I also had that with DD1 who was 8lb 10oz. So far it seems to have healed nicely, far better than before.

I am interested to read what replies people give.

My situation as I am pregnant with dc3.
Dd1 weighed 8lb 5oz, episiotomy, ventouse.
Ds 9lb 12oz, born in birth pool, shoulder dystocia, 2nd degree tear.

Consultant now says he believes it was 'difficult shoulder' not full dystocia. Says if I can give birth to nearly 10pm baby I can do bigger. Hmm

He has advised growth scans at 32/34/36 wks with view to inducing early if baby looks very big.

I have to admit I am scared by this. Everyone I know who's had growth scans seem to say they have been quite unreliable in predicting weight.

I had a scan at 36+6 weeks with DS2 as he was big....was told he was about 10lb9oz already and felt pressured in to induction.
I was induced at 37+1 and he was born (easily, 8 hours after having waters broken) weighing 9lb7oz.

I will not be pressured in to induction this time. Baby will come as and when ready.

I had a scan at 38 weeks and i was told DD was the top end of 7lbs i ended up having a 9lb 13oz baby!!

Thank god for cs! Grin

Water birth is the way to go, get all soft and pruney down there and you stretch.. Well I did anyway, DD was 9lb 10.5oz and I had no stitches.
I did wonder about perineal massage but never got round to it but it may be worth looking into
I was enormous by 38 weeks so had a scan as MW wasn't convinced it was just lots of fluid... The estimation was that DD was 8lbs..

I was told I was having a large baby (ds2) and had to have regular scans. Baby arrived at 40+3 weighing 9lbs11. Lovely lovely lovely birth - gas and air, a few stitches no probs!

ds1 on the other hand.... (ow)

I had 3 growth scans as I was consistently measuring ahead of dates

The first scan (28 weeks) had AC and HC on the 50th centile. Oh good I thought.

The next 2 (done at 37 and 39 weeks) had measurements plotted on the 97th centile. Oh dear I thought. Then I read the scan reports that both said difficult scan due to foetal lie. Well then, they won't be accurate I thought.

Turns out for me they were accurate.

My 11lb beautiful son was born on G&A with a small 2 degree tear 7 weeks ago. I tore much the same with my 8lb6oz DD2.

Good luck :)

Dd1 I was scanned consistently from 28 weeks as they predicted a big baby. Scans showed she had large head circumference, long legs and big tummy. Went it to spontaneous labour at 36 weeks and she was nearly 8lb!! Which matched nearly spot on the scan weight estimate a few days previous. I suffered an internal 4th degree tear which was stitched under a GA and a 2nd degree perianal tear - no mention of this being because of her size though more to do with her coming out with her hand up.

Now pregnant with DD2 and had first scan at 28 weeks she too apparently is measuring very large already (abdominal measurement was on 90th percentile!!!!). Due another scan in 3 weeks to check on her again but this one will be c-section anyway due to previous tear issues.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 05/02/2012 13:23

Dd was 'only' 9lb 4oz but head was on 99+ centile, as was ds's who was lighter. Both ok labours (induced) and no massive tearing, one stitch each time I think.

Growth scans were accurate for me.

4madboys · 05/02/2012 13:27

see i had scans as they thought my babies were small, they predicted 6-7lb.

my first was 8lb 7oz, then ds2 was 9lb 3oz, ds3 also small they said... 9lb 5oz.

ds4 was 10lb 13oz, had him in the birth pool, labour an hour long, no stitches required, am sure being in the pool helped.

anyway after having 4 'good sized' babies the consultant decided i 'may' be having a big baby with no, i however knew different, i could tell that the baby weighed less, having carried big babies i could just feel the difference, consutlant did a scan and said 9lb+ i said no not that big. he wnet on to say i may need a c section as baby was large, i did point out i had delivered 4 big babies vaginally just fine, all naturally, he said that was just 'luck'....maybe or maybe it shows that my body labours fine and can birth big babies..

anyway dd was 8lb exactly, so not 9lb+ like they said she was and i laboured fine, despite her being back to back.

i think scans can be helpful but they are often 10+% out, i measured small for dates and had small bumps, didnt put on loads of weight but still had big babies. i am only 5 2 and small, but delivered them all fine. i think staying mobile and trying out different postions helped, i found delivering kneeling up was good, or on all fours, positions that help your pelvis open up wide!

MrsHoolie · 05/02/2012 14:01

I had 8 growth scans due to large fundal measurements.
Scan on due date said 9lb 7oz,DS was born 2 days later at 10lb 6oz.

But he did have a small head and was very long at 62cm so skinny.

4madboys · 05/02/2012 14:24

my scan was the day before dd was born where they said 9lb+ and then she was only 8lb.

all my scans predicted small babies, its soo random!

debka · 05/02/2012 14:28

I had several growth scans, all of which predicted DD2 would be big. They were right. I was induced at 40 weeks and she was born quickly and easily with no damage at all weighing 10lb6.
