Pethidine

DH and I are writing the birth plan at the moment and having a debate about pethedine.

Could some lovely mn-ers give me their opinions please - positive or negative!

I had some incredible hallucinations about Alan Titchmarsh whilst on pethidine (1st labour). He was creating a marvellous gardening display in the corner of the labour room.
I cannot guarantee that you will have the same experience unfortunately.

I have just found this thread. I had pethidine but it only really as far as I remember took the top edge of the contraction off so almost like you were waiting for the really bad bit but it didn't happen.

I wasn't allowed to get up but I was on monitors and then went for an epidural for an emegency section.

Does anyone know why the hospital would have gone straight to pethidine and not offer gas and air first? I am trying to make sense of what happened to me. I have written to the hospital to discuss my notes but not heard anything yet.
