First period after childbirth?

Can anyone tell me what the first period after childbirth should be like?

My DD is 8 weeks old and I'm not BFing. Ive had some light spotting for 4 days in a row, but my periods are usually very heavy. I've tested and I'm not pregnant (thankfully!). Is this normal?

I didn't have a period for ages after DS1, but when it did arrive it was incredibly light compared to the very heavy ones I used to get. And they've never gone back to being as heavy and painful as they used to be!

I bf but the first night DS slept through I got my period (15 hours between feeds seemed to be enough of a signal to my body). First two were heavy and painful like they always used to be but now they are moderately heavy and almost painless.

Mine was a bloodbath but I'm sure its different for everyone.

A bloodbath. Had to be re- admitted. Never ever had heavy periods in my life. Genuinely thought I was dying Confused.

I bf and didn't get a period until about 10 months after my DS was born. It was light and I only had mild period pain, nothing bad.

I've had another since then and that has been the same. Long may it continue like this!

Mine was huge (but not painful)- but was at 8m and about one month after stopping bf'ing

Not bfing (anymore), DD is 3 months old, period came back earlier this week, very light.

sweetandtenderhooligan · 22/01/2012 08:34

I stopped bf 6 months ago. DS is 20 months old. Still haven't had a period yet Hmm

Thanks for the replies.

Nothing else since Thursday, I've tested again and it was negative so no idea what's going on.

Got mine exactly 4 weeks after DSs birth, despite only BFing. Also had to be readmitted to hospital after a call to NHS Direct as it was so heavy and I was passing large clots - I was terrified.

Hospital reassured me that it is completely normal for the first period to
be unlike your usual period (actually, they were quite rude to begin with and snapped "Didn't anyone tell you this when you gave birth...?". No one had said anything about periods to me!). I did deliver via caesarean though, so not sure if that makes a difference, and also only had the lochia bleeding for a few days after the birth. Never had a period like that again (DS is almost 4), and don't get period pains like I used to pre-children

rhondajean · 27/01/2012 23:12

I had no idea your first period after could be awful and my children are 7 and 12 - no one ever mentioned it.

I did find that despite BFing my periods returned immediately but were lighter and less painful, and still are.

I am very envious of those who had ten period free months.

Bumping this because I was just about to ask the same thing. DD2 is 8 weeks, am ff and what I assumed to be my period appeared last weekend. But it's been light to the point of non existence and today I've given up expecting it to step up a gear. I'm definitely not pregnant again, unless the angel Gabriel visited me in the night so I guess it is what it is and all bets are off after childbirth? After DD1 I think it was a bit of a bloodbath so I was expecting a repeat of that.

thefurryone · 10/03/2012 19:14

I had a fairly light first period, followed by the heaviest one I've ever had in my life.

From speaking to friends experiences seem to vary considerably, but the first few not being quite the same as usual seems to be quite normal.

RiskItForABiscuit · 10/03/2012 19:48

I was just going to ask this very question.

I'm bfing but did have one night with a 5 hour gap and that seems to have been enough to get my period back. But it's so light. The implatation spotting had more blood than this!

They just started yesterday and did have cramps the day before. I thought they might be back. It's only 9 weeks since giving birth so I'm gutted they are back so soon.
