Failed induction anyone?

This is a bit late to post this really but I'd like to read up more on it after the birth (there will be a birth...) you never know, I might be out again.

I'm now 40+10 (4th baby - all overdue, 2 previous inductions - 1 took a couple of days, one went straightaway), admitted last Monday for inductin at 40+5 due to sudden symptoms of pre-eclampsia - by Friday I had had 6 prostin gels and still only had a bishop's score of 6 (needed another point/cm to break my waters and start a drip). Totally fed up as you can imagine and was let out overnight last night to give my uterus a break!

Clearly this baby is just not ready but despite constant monitoring of me (bp, urine etc) and him, I just want him out now. Going back this morning for another round... And god that prostin burns!

Anyone else been through this and what was the outcome? Really don't want a section.

I had an induction with DD (7 years ago), my waters had already broke so the hospital used one dose of the gel. It didn't work, I got to 1/2 cm dilated so they put me straight on the drip. This worked and I was in labour for a total of 22 hours until they decided to do a section.

How overdue will they allow you to go? How far were you with the over pregnancies?

Hope you don't end up needing a section as thats not what you want.

Blimey Rach, I hope this lot works for you. My induction took 3 attempts and then the labour ended up being 2 hours start to finish and I was getting annoyed at that. All the best for today

I was 40 +14 and induction didn't work. Ds had to come out as he was v distressed so ended up with a section. You never know though so best of luck for today, hope it all goes well and look forward to hearing about your new arrival soon

I had a failed induction with DD. I was induced at 12 days overdue. Iwent int he Wednesday night and had the gel That didn't work at all. Thursday morning I had another dose. This, apparantly, thinned the cervix a little. Next dose was Thursday evening. This seemed to kick in int he early hours. Lots of pains, etc. The following morning, Friday, I went down tot he labour ward and was 2cm dilated. I had the drip put in and continued. Later that day I had an epidural. They were unable to break my waters successfully because of the lie of DD's head. However I never progressed beyond 2cm. By about 7.30-8pm Friday night it was obvious nothing was happening. So I had a cs and DD was born, happy and healthy, at 8:45pm.

As it turned out, because of the way DD was in the womb, it would have been extremely difficult, if at all possible, for her to have been born naturally, despite being "ready" to be born IYSWIM.

Anyway - at the end of the day I got a beautiful, healthy little girl. My cs was a really positive experience and in no way what I had imagined it to be. I got to cuddle DD briefly straight away. She was gone for 5 minutes max and brought back to us to cuddle. I was hope by the Monday lunch time and healed really well.

I was induced with DD because I was 14 days overdue. No signs of labour. Cervix wasn't ready. To make a LONG story short: sweep that day, Arrived at hospital that night to begin induction (Thursday evening at this point), by morning nothing happening, late friday afternoon evening, some mild contraaction. Finally went down to delivery aroun 9:00pm Friday night. Loaded up on epidural drugs so couldn't feel much. Around 2:00am Saturday baby was showing signs of distress. By 3:00 am I was in thetre for an emergency caesarean. The reason for all of this was because baby had rapped herself up in the in a manner that would put Tarzan to shame (around her neck twice, around her torso, and around her foot).

If I could go back, I would demand a scan in no uncertain terms. Ask them shy you haven't gone into labour and if it is an indication that the baby could be wrapped up in the cord.

Is the baby engaged? If not that could be a sign that he/she is wrapped up in the cord and literally suspended. It could also be a sign that the baby's head is too big to get down there.

After my experience with DD, I asked for a nice peaceful elective with DS last May. And if you think you might be in fro a caesarean an elective is a much nicer experience -- both for you and the poor baby who can avoid going into distress.

Also, I think all of this is an indication that you are neot ready; and not that the baby isn't ready. You have to also consider the possibility that the placents begins to break down around 42 weeks, but I assume they are watching this.

I was induced 6 times between 39 and 41 weeks but nothing works and yes prostin hurts like hell, not to mention all those blooming internals. They let me go to 42 + 6 days before finally I went into labour from an incredibly vicious sweep that made me scream.

Having said that, her head was just too big to fit through and after 24 hours ended up with a caesarian. Its different for you though with 3 normal deliveries first. Just do all you can to get the ball rolling, long walks, curry, sex, anything to irritate your womb into submission!! and good luck!

Thanks for all your thoughts and wishes! Had another (7th prostin) yesterday and nothing Yes I have tried all the usual kick-starts but if 7mg prostin doesn't do it, I don't know what else would! Had an examination and a really good sweep today and nothing... so home now to sort my head and see the kids (and buy big pants) before c-section tomorrow or wed at the latest - am now 40+12 and becoming a 'semi-emergency'. Babe is 3/5 engaged and I think despite the 3 'normal' deliveries there must be some problem with the presentation of his head - ds2 was face up, dd - face (chin) first so in all likelihood I was probably going to have problems anyway. Rather an elective section than a awful labour + section. No-body ever mentioned a scan (and i don't know why it didn't occur to me) but they are happy with all the traces (ie not showing any distress) and the position on palpation (obviously they don't know about the head). Anyway will let you know!

Good luck. It will be lovely -- really. Don't forget your arnica!! And it will be lovely to be wide awake and still full of energy when you meet your baby for the first time.

oh, good luck! I had 7 failed inductions too - it was agony! They leat me have 2 days off then labour started & all would have been fine except DS gave a brow presentation right at the end and got jammed on my pubic bone. I hate prostin!!! I ended up with an emergency cs but recovered really quickly - fingers crossed for you and your little one - must be a boy to be taking this long!

Ediemay - yes, it is a boy! And I think you're right about the presentation (I've had a face to pubes and a chin/face presentation before so he must be doing something odd in there!)
