Did you 'nest'?

Just been talking to my mum.

I'm 8 months pregnant with DC2, she's 500 miles away and as DS1 was born at 8 months she's understandably gearing up to leap on a train at any moment Grin

She says 'as soon as you start nesting; turning out cupboards and frantically cleaning - call me!'

I'm the messiest slattern ever pretty laissez-faire when it comes to housework, but I wondered if many people actually did the nesting thing just before going into labour?

I didn't - we were in the middle of having an extension built when DS1 arrived, so there was absolutely no turning out cupboards and frantically cleaning! Would have been a waste of time. I only just had the moses basket out of the loft, and he was 2 days after due date.

Jules125 · 04/01/2012 13:26

Absolutely not! [also very laissez-faire with housework] But then I had ELCS and never went into labour

BlueChampagne · 04/01/2012 13:26

Forgot to say that even without extension distraction, I didn't do any nesting with DS2 either. Stopped work on Friday; he turned up on Sunday.

Did you nest with your DS1? That's probably the best indicator.

claireinmodena · 04/01/2012 13:33

I have been nesting since 20week scan really... I am now 32 weeks!

With previous pregnancies same thing, I was virtually nesting all the way through, wanting to have everything ready by the time they arrived: they were 40+4 and 41+2!!

I personally I think its and old wife's tale...

mistressploppy · 04/01/2012 13:39

Good point Blue - no, I didn't, but I wondered if I might have done had he not been a bit prem.

Bit gutted really, it would have been nice to get the house a bit tidier Grin

I think it might be an old wives' tale, as you say clairein

I am nesting now, there is a lot to do (26+6 so not due yet!)
I am usually a slattern too Grin

For the week before DS was born, I helped my mum strip wallpaper in her house.
The day before he was born, I sat on the floor and cleaned my washing machine. But he was overdue and I was trying to pass time more than anything!!

feetheart · 04/01/2012 13:51

Not at all with DD.
For about 45 mins with DS - between ringing midwife and her turning up (homebirth) to check me out when my waters broke in the middle of the night.

Tanyaaah · 04/01/2012 13:55

I was helping re-tile the patio at 40 weeks. I had to be done for the baby! I also vacuumed and cleaned the car, cleaned out all the kitchen cupboards, decorated the kitchen and lots more in the last few weeks. I was convinced I would never have chance again.
I actually had loads of time as the baby was always asleep.

Flisspaps · 04/01/2012 13:57

I don't think I did nest with DD but this time round I've been at it since about 24 weeks.

Xmasbaby11 · 05/01/2012 14:03

Well I am now 41+4 and I haven't nested at all - much to DH's disappointment! There is something of an urge to get things ready for baby, but I got bored of that weeks ago. At the moment I am looking at the kitchen floor and willing myself to clean it ...

LoveInASnowyClimate · 07/01/2012 16:36

I am 30 weeks and have been nesting since about 24 weeks... I'm normally pretty keen on housework anyway but this level of cleaning and tidying is unusual even for me Grin.

YankNCock · 07/01/2012 16:40

I ironed all the baby clothes. I never iron anything if I can help it, and can go for years without touching an iron. It was like I was possessed.

sillymillyb · 07/01/2012 17:08

I really hope the nesting kicks in for me or baby is coming home to a pig sty, half finished nursery and empty kitchen cupboards....

Daffodilly · 07/01/2012 17:11

I always thought I didn't nest - but DH recalls coming home to find me cleaning the shower with an old toothbrush so.....

LoveInASnowyClimate · 07/01/2012 17:16

I always do that, Daffodilly - is that weird!?

FutureNannyOgg · 07/01/2012 17:38

I was stripping wallpaper 2 days before I went into labour.

ZuleikaJambiere · 07/01/2012 22:29

I developed a bit of a skirting board obsession in the last trimester - dusted them daily, and even varnished all those upstairs while on mat leave. I figured it wasn't a bad thing to obsess about, seeing as it was the first (and last) time they'd ever had any TLC. I am now 34+2 with DC2 and have just found myself eyeing the layer of dust on those skirting boards again today - and 3 yrs worth of minimal dusting suddenly looks very offensive to me

MiauMau · 08/01/2012 16:23

YankNCock I'm with you, to the point that DP was starting to get jealous "Why is it that my unborn son's gets ironed clothes and I don't?" :o

booisgreat · 08/01/2012 17:24

Hi Ladies

I definitely nest.

On dd 2 I woke up on a Saturday morning and had it in my head that I needed new baby sheets. I had a massive fight with dh over buying new baby sheets. The roads were treacherous and he said no way as I had almost 2 months left and could buy them anytime. DD 2 arrived 2 days later at 33 weeks. On dd 1, I had ordered gates and they were to be hung at some stage. One day I woke up and decided the gates had to be hung THAT DAY even though it was the week before Xmas. Through tantrums and crying about being pregnant the gates were hung and DD arrived 2 days later. She was 2 weeks early.

sillymillyb · 08/01/2012 17:38

Do you think we could make a cleaning business up of entirely pregnant staff with various cleaning obsessions... we'd make a fortune!

notcitrus · 08/01/2012 18:01

We got told about nesting at antenatal classes - MrNC looked very excited as we lived in a semi-derelict house then having a loft conversion done.
I stared at him, reminded him I was already in a wheelchair from SPD, and told him not to get his hopes up!
Spent the last fortnight before birth mostly asleep.

Did start buying things online, though.
