So I had my sweep today, now what?

I had my sweep at 10am this morning, and I'm now picking apart every single twinge and ache!

DS is at nursery until 5 today, so I have time to tidy the house, do some washing etc, but I keep constantly thinking about it!

The MW said that I was already 1-2cm dialated, and that she had a hunch that I would go into labour if not tonight then the early hours of the morning which makes me even more excited.

I then went onto the CTG to be monitored for half hour, and I was having irregular tightnings and her heart rate was very up and down which she also said was a really positive sign.

So, what did you do to pass the time after your sweep? I must've packed and un-packed my hospital bag five times since being home!

I was also 2cm dilated when I had a sweep.

What did I do after?

Sat about at home, watched TV, bounced on the ball waiting to go into labour. MW didn't think I'd be waiting long.

I waited for a whole week.

Then went in for induction.

NoobyNoob · 04/01/2012 13:03

Hmmm, better try not to get my hopes up then. Mind you, if it doesn't work I only have to wait until Friday then I get admitted anyway :)

I would go for a long walk - gravity helps!

MarthasHarbour · 04/01/2012 13:12

I had a flisspaps experience too.

Me and my friend went for a little outing to have our sweeps Grin, she went in first, then i went in. MW said to both of us that we were 'almost there' and that i was 1-2cm dilated

We both went back to mine, sat in the garden eating ice lollies (sweltering June)

Waited for labour (any signs B1? Nothing B2)

She went into labour a week later

I was induced 8 days later, apparantly i had never dilated. Ended up having a CSection (it was all fine BTW)

We both got v excited by our sweeps but they came to nothing. I actually dont know any of my mamma friends who went into labour as a result.

I would relax, drink Brew (decaff) and enjoy the day. Oo and good luck! Smile

after i had my sweep with my dc1 - she told me that i was 2 cm dliated and that she was certain i would be holding my baby in the next 24 hours. well a whole week later and natural onset of labour hours before due to being induced...then with dd i had a consultant appt. he checked my cervix and said it was not ready yet but gave me a good sweep, went into labour pratically straightway - you can never tell!

haddock1976 · 04/01/2012 13:18

Envy my LO is too high for the MW to even attempt a sweep and I'm 40+7, she's showing no signs of budging.

Will keep fingers crossed for you. Smile

Flisspaps · 04/01/2012 13:49

Exactly MarthasHarbour - am not going to bother with one if I get that far this time round.

Listzilla · 04/01/2012 14:45

When my obs did a sweep she said I was 1-2cm, soft and fully effaced, and that I'd go into labour within a couple of days.

I went home, panicked made sure my bag was packed, and sat in the garden and had tea with some visitors. I had a bit of cramping and some bleeding and really felt things were imminent.

I ended up being induced a week later, and at which stage the midwives thought I was neither dilated nor effaced! It's all very subjective apparently.

Try and relax and get as much sleep as you can, would be my advice.

Xmasbaby11 · 04/01/2012 17:18

Try to keep busy. I've had 2 sweeps and despite the positive signs, neither has amounted to anything!

I agree midwives don't necessarily know how ready you are - my first one sai I was 3cm dilated, and the second one (a week later) said I was not dilated at all. So try not to read too much into it!

NoobyNoob · 04/01/2012 19:30

Wow, after reading all these I now feel totally deflated!

It's hard not to get to excited or read too much into it when I so desperately want to see her after a very long and complicated pregnancy.

Ho hum, at least I only have tomorrow if it doesn't happen.

I was a few days overdue and had a sweep on the monday afternoon - was already 1cm dilated.

Tuesday night I lost some of my waters, but just a dribble really.

By wednesday afternoon I was contracting every 4/5 mins but was only 3 cms dilated on weds afternoon. They gave me a choice...stay in or go home.

Went home. Contracting every 3-4 mins....bearable with tens.

Went back in thursday morning. Was still only 4-5cms on examination Sad so they broke my waters and ds2 was born 3 hours later!!!!

Good luck!

namechangerbat · 04/01/2012 19:44

My sweep with dd2 was at 40+1

Had sweep at 4pm

Regular contractions by 6

Waters went at 7

Baby born next morning

dontrememberme · 04/01/2012 19:45

I had a sweep when 9 days overdue, came home lazed around like a big fat hippo & went into labour that night! DS1 was born the following morning. Grin

Xmasbaby11 · 05/01/2012 14:00

2 sweeps and now 11 days late with no signs. Gutted!

miskatonic · 05/01/2012 16:28

I had my sweep at 3pm and didn't do anything different after, just went about my normal business. I wish I had rested because contractions started around 7pm and I didn't sleep all night. Went to the birth centre the following afternoon and 10 hours later my daughter was born

Pascha · 05/01/2012 16:32

I had my sweep at 12.30pm on day 40+8. MW said I was 3cm dilated and she thought it would be in the next couple of days and to call again on day 3 for another if nothing had happened.

Had the first contraction just before 10pm that night, baby born 6 hours later.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2012 16:33

Sweep at 7.30pm baby at 3am.

My midwife attempted sweep last Fri when was 40 wks but no joy as cervix posterior and closed. Did not hurt at all. Went back again this morning and had sweep by a different midwife and I nearly jumped off the bed when she did it Blush I am a total wimp though!
Anyway was much more successful as she got lots of 'show' and I am a good 1cm dilated so she thinks I should go into labour over weekend :) I have since had a bit of cramp and some bleeding so looking like things are moving along. Hurray!
From reading lots of threads on MN it seems that the successful sweeps are ones that hurt so no pain no gain....

whathaveIletmyselfinfor · 10/01/2012 23:18

Just an update for anyone sitting at home awaiting a sweep! I was asked to go to hosp on Sun so my waters could be checked as thought they had leaked and I had been having irregular pains through the day. They were still intact but as I was there midwife did another sweep at 7.30pm. First contraction 7.40pm and went home where they became regular through the night until I went to hosp at 8am. Waters broke 5 mins after arriving and I had my gorgeous gorgeous baby at 1.05pm. Labour was definitely nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be! Paracetamol only for first 12 hours and was lucky enough to have a fab midwifery team on hand at my local MLU :)
