The poops lasted about 45mins. I only took a small amount. cant remember exactly how much though

If you are overdue anyway, then the chances are you will go into labour pretty soon with or without giving yourself a raging case of the shits. So the fact that someone took castor oil and then went in to labour some hours later doesn't tell you much.

I spoke to a couple of midwives..one in favor and one against. I decided I would trust the hypnobirthing book and go for it. Dd was 3 days coming from waters breaking, needed drip episiotomy etc almost forceps she weighted 9lb 15.

I then went 8 days over on ds and was measuring off the chart I was terrified of induction ending in forceps or section. Like I said gynae will recommend same next time.

RitaMorgan - Normally I'd agree but I found details of an interesting study which showed that 58% of women who took it started labour shortly after compared with 4% from the control group who were just as overdue.

Fish - IMO those are sound medical reasons for wanting to try something different. It's that scenario that I'm also keen to avoid.

For a different pov from all those saying it was fine my mum used castor oil to induce labour with my youngest brother he was born in a car 20 mins later her with raging shits and he ended up in scbu for a week after inhaling meconium, to this day she feels awful about it. I have been 10days late and induced which I hated and the 9 days late and bordering on desperate but refused induction and the plan was for regular scans but he came naturally. I'm now nearly 40 weeks and would be happy enough to be induced as I've spoken to so many people who have said 2nd 3rd inductions are a breeze compared to 1st usually just a case of breaking waters.

Personally I couldn't risk the castor oil.

Thanks youtalkintome - it's useful to hear stories like that. Even if the meconium was unrelated (I guess you could never know for sure) you'd have to live with the guilt of it forever...

This is I really tough topic.. A lot of thought would have to go in to taking castor oil, the poos sound awful! But then again..I was medically induced with ds1 because 11 days overdue and had preclampsia and now pregnant with 2nd, I'm rly nervous about going overdue and being medically induced again, wasn't the nicest of experiences and hoping I go into it naturally. But if not I think I may carry out some research of castor oil.

Had such a horrible hospital induction experience I would try ANYTHING next time round to avoid it! As long as you do it and someone else is with you (incase you do become ill) I'd rather have the shits for a bit then have the pain of being induced.
