Baby is three weeks old. Passed a big clot tonight...

Well that's mostly it really. Should I be worried? The clot was about 4-5 inches and my Auntie - who was a MW - said it might have been a bit of retained placenta. Anyone had this? I had a planned c-section so would really surprised if they'd missed a big bit like that, but then there has been all sorts of concerns about DD losing weight and whether or not my milk 'came-in properly'. If it is placenta tissue, will my milk be affected at all - for better or worse? I'm managing to EBF DD without masses if effort now, but it certainly adds an interesting slant to all that's happened since her birth! MPD

I think if the clot is bigger than a 50p piece then you should speak to the midwife.

Not sure about it affecting milk supply.

But gross but my mws told me to catch and save any bits as they would want to rake around in them Blush

NHS direct: 0845 4647 or ring delivery suite for advice. Tonight.

Retained placenta can affect milk supply. Here's the explanation of how milk supply works.

Can you compare it to a piece of fruit in size? I remember plassing one plum sized that the midwife wasn't worried about. Mind you, that was a couple of days after, not three weeks. She mentioned a grapefruit being a cause for concern Shock

Hope you're OK and that you can get hold of some medical advice tonight.

Phone delivery suite. Let us know how you get on x

LaVitaBellissima · 29/10/2011 22:27

I agree you should phone the midwife and check.

FWIW I had a C section (twins), I bled for 10 weeks following and I had 3 occasions when I had huge clots, fist size (sorry for the TMI Blush) I went to A&E, lots of tests and it was fine.

Hope you are ok and Congratulations on your baby Smile

LaVitaBellissima · 29/10/2011 22:29

Oh and I'm still breastfeeding although the girls needed to be supplemented with formula for the first two weeks. I'm sure your babies weight gain will get better, afaik after a section it can take longer for your supply to get up.

MintChocAddict · 29/10/2011 22:32

Same as LaVita. Passed a couple of clots - last one about 7 weeks after DC1 was born. Bled for 10 weeks in all.
Placenta had bit missing following delivery so presume it was to do with that. All was well though after the 10 weeks and bleeding had stopped.

Would get checked out anyway for piece of mind.

I phoned delivery suite last night - they were reassuring/unconcerned. We are still under our midwives (because of DD's slow weight gain) so one is booked in to see/weigh us today. Have kept the clot and will talk to her about it this afternoon. In myself I'm fine - no pain, no fresh blood etc. Thanks for all yours thoughts, experiences and advice - much appreciated! MPD
