If your waters break first time, will they go first next time?

Am 37 weeks pregnant tomorrow, DD arrived at 37+5 weeks 17 months ago. Had no BHs, twinges nothing whatsoever until my waters broke, got checked by hospital sent home as cervix was closed only for contractions to start, went back in 1 cm dilated, 4 hours later DD was born.

Question is, if my waters went first last time what are the chances of them going again prior to contractions starting?

Would like a bit of advance warning (few hours) this time too? or can anyone tell me when my baby will be born?

Mine went naturally first time but not with the following 3.

My crystal ball tells me that you will DEFINATELY have your baby

within the next 4 months

Within the next 4 months

myturn

Exactly the same thing happened with my first, Kittymas.

And my second and the birth was faster too.

I don't know why but all the midwives thought this was noteworthy (waters breaking first that is)

MW said won't always follow that waters will go first this time and she said I will be aware it is going to start from twinges or backache (wasn't last time).

4 months what do you think I am an elephant?

My waters went first time 14 hours before matt came but with bex it was around 3hrs so you just never know.

fuzzywuzzy · 21/12/2005 17:04

no my waters broke the first time.
Second time the midwife had to break them as they wouldn't break and I was stuck at 6cm for about the most excruciating 4 hours of my life.....

jinglinggoblin · 21/12/2005 17:06

mine went at the same stage with all 3 of mine, but it was very late on, quite a bit after i starting pushing

myturn · 21/12/2005 17:08

Well, you definately WILL have your baby within the next 4 months!! Was telling the truth - my crystal ball never lies .

My second labour was much quicker than the first despite waters not breaking second time round. Still 10hrs though ...

mythumbelinas · 21/12/2005 17:10

sorry kitty, don't know what the chances are, but my waters broke first both times.
First one happened on loo (lucky!) admitted to hospital with no contractions, twiddled fingers for most of day then it all happened quite fast, but not painful .. nice birth! 2 days early.
Second, been out and about driving, but evening had a 'feeling' and sat on sofa with towel folded 3 times .. waters broke 15 mins later (lucky!!) .. off to hospital, watched eastenders while contractions were strong and frequent, then it was fast and furious .. the most pain she was 1 week early

alicemama · 21/12/2005 17:11

With my dd1 my waters went 2 days before I went into labour with no bh's or anything.

I was worried that this would happen again with dd2 but they didn't go until about 5mins before she was actually delivered. And my 2nd labour def went quicker dd1= 17 1/2hrs dd2= 5hrs

Mercy · 21/12/2005 17:18

Kittymas - well you can tell your midwife she is wrong! ABout the backache or twinges I mean.

Good luck!

donnie · 21/12/2005 18:10

my waters broke 24 hours before contractions started with dd1. With dd2, contractions started and I was several centimetres dilated and in AGONY!!!! before the midwife ruptured them....so expect the unexpected! I always assumed they would break again for dd2 but they didn't/

alibag · 21/12/2005 18:31

With DS1 my waters broke & I had a light steady flow of fluid, but didn't really start labour & ended up being induced after 48 hours: after a morning of irregular contractions whilst I was stuck on a bed festooned with monitor wires, the MW said she didn't think my waters had broken properly so she ruptured them (that surely is a crochet hook) and then contractions really ramped up a notch (leading to 'happydural' and eventually the arrival of DS1)
With DS2 my waters also broke & I had a light steady flow, but this time the contractions kicked in quick & hard & he was born 6 hours later.

I think it's unusual for waters to go first, in fact they not 'supposed' to go until the end of the first stage and ARM (artificial rupture of membranes) by a mw can actually stop the baby's head shifting into the best position. With my ds1 my waters had gone (trickling) on the Saturday morning, I went in with no contractions Sat night - had a sweep (unfavourable cervix - ouch!!!) they went completely then but I still took another 24 hrs to go into labour. With ds2 and dd they were intact until I had ARM at about 8 cm.

expatinscotland · 22/12/2005 16:44

Mine didn't go at all w/DD1 until the midwife ruptured them at 8cm. W/DD2, they went naturally when I got to 10 cm and started pushing.

DinosaurInAManger · 22/12/2005 16:45

My waters broke one week before DS1 was due, had had no other signs before that.

With DS2, again my waters breaking presaged me going into labour proper, but I'd had lots and lots of pre-labour pangs before that, and he was nearly a week overdue, so it was a bit different. However it was much much faster second time around - waters broke 4.30 p.m., started having contractions around about 6 p.m., he was born at 8.17 p.m. . Very wham bam hello mam!

With DS3, it was all different again, waters didn't break first (well, only hindwaters, I think) and all a bit slower, which was rather more bearable actually.

deckthehillswithboughsofmummy · 22/12/2005 16:54

Waters went on the monday dd arrived on the wednesday, however with ds waters went 1hr before he arived in the world.

alexsmum · 22/12/2005 17:36

mine didn't go till the pushing stage with both mine.with ds 2 they burst and he was born 8 minues later! and when i say burst i mean burst- soaked the midwife!!!
