How do you measure how long your labour is?

Have seen discussions on here about the various length of people's labours... Was just wondering what point you start the clock, so to speak? Do you count it from when contractions really kick in? Or from when you're four cm dilated /established labour? Mine (DC1)took 8 hrs from then, but not sure if I'm measuring 'length of labour' correctly!

Thanks

Thanks Tempingmaniac. Sounds like I got off quite lightly then, I take my hat off to you, that sounds intense!
