Do subsequent babies arrive earlier?

What do you think? Is there any truth to the notion that subsequent (to the first) babies arrive earlier? If so, what's the reasoning behind this?

DS1 5 weeks early and DS2 3 weeks early. So for me no. Althought the births were very similar, waters popping, 5 hours with the first 7 hours with the 2nd. Both fast dialations from 4 - 10cm in about 50 mins with each, as midwife said "Cervix like a Ferrari"

RainySmallHands · 30/08/2011 17:43

DC1 3 weeks early, DC2 4 days early. So not for me.

LawrieMarlow · 30/08/2011 17:44

DS born at 38+3
DD born at 40+4

So not true for me either.

bananatrifle · 30/08/2011 17:46

No, DS1 was a bit early, then the subsequent 3 were all around 2 weeks late.

Xavielli · 31/08/2011 08:10

DC1 - 27 days early
DC2 - 7 days early
DC3 - 2 days early.

So not for me!

Secondtimelucky · 31/08/2011 09:55

Nope, +8 and then +9. A few HCPs have said to me that those in the area think anecdotally that it's actually the other way around - a couple of days later per baby.

Flisspaps · 31/08/2011 10:00

Secondtimelucky Buggeration, DD finally appeared at 40+16, ugh, the thought of 40+18 vs induction for #2, what a choice!

Secondtimelucky · 31/08/2011 10:42

No, I'm psychic don't you know, and I predict you won't go to +16 [gazes into crystal ball meaningfully].

GetDownYouWillFall · 31/08/2011 13:07

I saw the consultant midwife a couple of weeks ago and she said statistically that 2nd babies arrive 2 or 3 days before first babies, in terms of gestation.

Seems from all your experiences this is not necessarily the case! 38 weeks today. DD arrived at 38+5... so am just waiting now!

LoveBeingIgnoredByMardyBra · 31/08/2011 13:31

Dd came one day before her due date. Ds is due a week on thurs and currently still tucked up Grin

LifeOfKate · 31/08/2011 20:42

It was true for me, just! DS arrived at 42 weeks exactly, 2 days after induction started. DD arrived at 40+11, the day before I was due in to hospital to be induced :o

LaTristesseDurera · 31/08/2011 20:47

DS1 born at 40+5
DS2 born at 40+14 (a few hours before I was due to be induced)

tortilla · 31/08/2011 20:49

DS (40+4, but went into labour at 40+2)
DD (40+13, induced as too lazy to bother coming of her own accord)

So no, doesn't hold for me either. I know several friends who have gone a fair bit longer with subsequent babies. As ever, they just come when they're ready, or forcibly evicted if they're lazy :)

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 31/08/2011 20:50

True for me Smile

Ds1 was born at 42 +5 (induced)

Ds2 arrived on his due date Grin

ohbabybaby · 02/09/2011 11:29

DS1: went into labour 40+2 (born 40+4)
DS2: went into labour 40+0

So I uphold the theory!

going · 02/09/2011 11:32

DD1 9 days early

DD2 2 days late

DS 9 days early

Not true for me!

stump · 03/09/2011 18:23

not true for me. DD was 5 weeks early. DS was two weeks late! Having had extremes I would definitely prefer a late baby to a premie if there were to be a next time!!

mumblejumble · 03/09/2011 21:47

Ds1, two weeks late
Ds2 10 days late
Ds3 20 days late
Ds4 1 week late
DD 1 day before due date
Am no expecting DS5, hoping for around due date, but these boys are lazy.

mumblejumble · 03/09/2011 21:48

Am now expecting DS5...
