Constultant fee for caesarean delivery

My BUPA will cover a private caesarean, but will only pay the consultant £548 for the delivery, plus 1 pre and post op appointment, and will only pay the anaesthetist £200.

It's easy to find out what a package cost for the consultant is, but not so easy to find out what the cost of the actual delivery is. Does anyone know?

I have only seen the whole price, maybe find a local place that offers private and ring them and ask for the price of the section only not all the before and aftercare.

Mmmm I could tell you what we are paying the consultant (he costs the same no matter how you deliver, currently we are planning VB) but that is for all care from 20 weeks (but doesn't include the hospital charges which are separate and substantial and more if you deliver by CS! Also the anaethsetist is also separate and I think £500 for eg an epidural) - are you in London? You might find out which consultants are covered by your insurance and ring their secretary to check availability. Would have thought actually not too difficult to get someone if you just need one appointment before the birth, scheduled cesearean and one appointment after.

No consultant in London charges £548. You are looking at £15k for CS, anaesthetist and private post-natal (this is what the Chelsea & Westminster charge).

Yes sh77 (I am giving birth at the Kensington Wing), but I expect the consultant's fees will be less if he is just doing the delivery. My consultant's fees were £7500 (hospital fees extra) but as I said that is all care from 20 weeks. I have some friends who paid about 2/3 of that for care from about 30 weeks (recently returned from abroad). So assume would be less still if we are only talking about two appointments and delivery (though of course the bulk of his time will be spent on the delivery).

You are of course right though, we will still be talking thousands as opposed to hundreds. At C&W the hospital charge on top is £3800 for VB (which only includes 1 night stay), or £4900 for CS (which again only includes 1 night). Additional nights are £850/950 for VB and CS respectively.

I would guess around £2-3K consultant fee for caesarean only (no ante-natal care).

You'd need to ring the consultant's secretary to check, but I think £548 is very unlikely to cover it - this is normal for insurance companies though, so you may end up having to pay the excess yourself.

For just the op you are looking at £2-3000 for the consultant plus the hospital fee and stay in hospital. For the Portland this will be about £12,000.
