Piles/Haemmoroids duringbirth?

Hi

I'm not sure if anyone is prepared to talk about this on an internet forum but I was wondering if anyone that suffered from piles/haemmoroids during pregnancy got them bad as a result of labour??

I've suffered a bit with these and am scared of what will develop after labour.

lucy I suffered piles after giving birth to 5th child, they were so painful and bad that I used rubber ring and that cream (forgotten name)for a several days.
Found it cleared up after about a week.

I had them when pregnant with no 4 (they were agony and I was sooo embarassed - can't imagine why, really). Anyway got cream (think it was germaloids or something like that) which helped a lot with the soreness.
Didn't have any real problems with them during labour and tbh they cleared up pretty quickly after dd was born.

Oh my word yes! I had the mother of all haemmarrhoids (can't spell the damn things though)! Started at about 7 months pregnant, got soooo bad after the birth it shocked my midwife when she came to see me the day after I was discharged.

My GP gave me some cream that shrinks them call Scheriproct ointment - wonderful wondeful stuff, but can only be used for 7 days as it's so powerful. These were combined with Anusol suppositories and I tell you what I have never been so eager to stick something up my backside. The relief was amazing. Took about a week to have real relief though. If you suffer with them get to your GP asap and start the treatment the very day you start to feel them getting uncomfortable - don't wait for them to get too bad.

got them after the birth!! - awful. Had a cream but it took about 5 weeks for them to go away (I hope)

I had them after giving birth to Lottie.
I felt so lucky to have escaped with no tearing, no stitches etc.
Then the nurse exam9ined me and said 'ohh piles, you poor thing, they're more painful than stitches'. She was trying to be nice but I wanted to smack her one. I felt sorry for myself then and was doing ok with the 'pheww well this is bad but at least I escaped stitches' idea!!!!

I have one again now I'm pregnant with my 2nd. I used Anusol (subtle name aye) which is working and helping.

I'm reminded of a sketch Victoria Wood did a few years ago. She said when she gave birth she asked her mother to knit 2 hats. One for the baby & the other for the haemorrhoid.

Do piles feel like you have pieces of glass stuck there? and it bloody hurts?

Wow this is refreshing! DD2 5 mths old and I'm still waiting for the damn things to disappear. Come and go and I haven't had the courage to see the doctor. Made 2 appointments and cancelled. Feel really embarrased about them seeing my bum, despite 2 emergency cs and everyone seeing everything else. whats going on? Is it really that easy Queeneagle?

BTW, I had mine removed by a surgeon. Ouch!

Thanks for all your replies - I wouldn't wish piles on anyone but I'm relieved to hear of other people's experiences.

Karmamother - did yours refuse to go away hence the need for surgery? Do you mind me asking if you were under general or local anesthetic?

I read on one forum a lady saying hers were teh size of golf balls after labour

i had piles 2 weeks before i was due and ended up with abit of haemmoroids - it was terrible and terrifying - i shitted myself incase i bring on labour!! and ended up calling the ambulance to come nad get me, but just before they arrived i was relieved but they had to check my BP as ive got hyperstension BP.

Didn't have them till birth of my 3rd child who was 9lbs 14oz. I used Anusol HC (i think). mw also suggested a condon filled with ice cubes wrapped in cloth and placed on the area concerned. Sounds awful but it really helped to shrink and took the 'heat' out of the buggers!!

Its really best not to worry too much about it esp once in labour, one midwife said to me no woman can go through labour without some degree of piles, then told me she had them (I didn't know where to look!). At least you are prepared for the possibility, app NCT sell a valley cushion for general relief of the area which is something i wish i had known about. Stock up on and prob start eating poo inducing food now if you have't already - i found fruit and fibre cereal and apple juice really good. I didn't take my iron tablets as they can cause constipation but I was pale and lethargic for some time as a result. I only used the cream a couple of times as my stitches became infected, and although I think the piles are still lurking around it doesn't hurt. I had lots of hot salty baths which didn't seem to do any harm.

If you have stitches make sure you are checked every day if you are in hosp for more than a few hours, i was in hospital for a couple of days and wasn't checked until i was literally out the door with my coat on. It was only then I found out I had piles - it was the last straw and I cracked up! My brother (24) took me aside and said don't tell any one (sorry bro) but I have piles, at least you have a baby to show for it.

I also wasn't checked properly by the midwives at home and it was only when one checked me lying on my back rather than my side that she found one of my stitches had burst so a suppositry (awful, messy experience for me!) probably wasn't the best thing to have used in that situation.

Anyway to sum up don't worry about it just be prepared so that you can be as comfy as possible if they get worse after giving birth (which hopefully they won't).

I hope everything goes really well for you and just concentrate on the lovely baby to come x

ooh I forgot the piles midwife told me to lie on my bed with my legs in the air against the wall and do pelvic floor exercises - I din't get round to this more than once with a new baby on the scene but it can't hurt to try!

Had them after DD born - took iron tablets for anaemia, vicious constipation and then bad piles . Found drinking lots of water and having a fybogel 2x a day really helped to ease the pain whilst they shrank. Used anusol as well.

Your GP will prescribe Fybogel (I got prescribed 100 sachets and now have hoardes of the stuff!)which saves a bit of £££. Don't know if they will prescribe Anusol as I was too embarrassed to ask! Incidentally, there is a good website called www.blushingbuyer.com for these awful items if you are having a day when you can't face the local chemist.....

Sorry me again it might be worth asking a midwife to show you how to breastfeed lying down if you find you are uncomfy. I could never figure it out myself.

Horrible things, I've suffered over 6yrs with them on and off with bleeding etc started with my first preg and got worse with 2nd preg. Have now been referred to hospital as its causing problems when passing any motions and my appointment is on Monday afternoon. I feel mortified having to go and have a doctor/specialist look at my behind but dp assures me they will have seen worse bottoms than mine. Wish me luck!

Kidstrack2 - best of luck with your appointment, I hope they can do soemthing to sort it out - do you think they'll suggest the minor surgery that someone else in the thread had?

Ialso had a crop of grapes pop out a few days after giving birth, and they were no fun at all.

I sat on a peeled, frozen banana in a condom wrapped in a soft facecloth , as it softens and is more comfortable than icecubes or peas.

The stuff the dr prescribes is 2 or 3 times stronger than Anusol HC, and it works...ahhhhh...so well. The reason you should only use it for 1 week is that it contains hydrocortisone. For some unknown reason a pile popped out last week, and gave me utter misery, until I dug out some leftover cream from dd's birth. It only took two days treatment, with massive relief from the first treatment.

Don't be embarrased, it's totally normal. My mum was told a few years ago that it is more normal for a woman who has had children to have piles than not to.
