Had sweep this morning, what else can I do to increase chances of something happening?

I know way more people who found that a sweep had no effect than I do people who went into labour after a sweep, so not feeling hugely hopeful though the midwife did say it's more successful with non-first-timers and this is dc3.

So I'm 40+8, sweep this morning (cervix still quite long and posterior), had lots of twinges/cramping/BH over last 4 weeks but nothing else.

Should I be walking for miles? Bouncing on my birth ball? Sleeping to gain energy? What? Any ideas?

She's offered a 2nd sweep on Wednesday if nothing happens between now and then.

Sleep Wink definitely

Absolutely nothing is shown to influence labour starting. People can swear by pineapples and sex and curry as much as they like but nothing has ever been shown to be anything more than an old wives tale. For every person that had sex and had a baby within 24hrs, I can probably find at least 3 people for whom it didn't work like that. For example.

I'd do whatever you want to do. Sleep, eat, wander around, potter a bit, whatever makes you happy.

Two votes for sleep - excellent, suits me while older 2 are at nursery Wink

For medical reasons (early water break) I had to get baby out within a timescale. Fresh pineapple does help - there is a chemical in it that helps stimulate the womb, but it does have to be fresh pineapple, not tinned. Also sniffing clary sage will help, and maybe acupuncture. I had all these and labour came on just in time to avoid induction.

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 23/05/2011 14:42

Fresh pineapple DOES have an enzyme in it associated with the start of labour. To replicate this enzyme in the right quantities to even start making a difference you would have to eat AT LEAST 8 pineapples in one go, including the leaves and the peel. You physically couldn't do it. If it did work, they'd ban pineapple before you reached term... Ditto clary sage etc etc. No studies have ever shown anything to be more than occasional coincidence.

Second (or is it third?!) getting some sleep if you can. Maybe a bit of a walk when you wake up if you can. Relax Smile

I agree with Turtles - the reality is that the baby will come when it's ready.

Yes, I've always felt that but thought if there was something sensible I could do (ideally would like to avoid induction but am getting so uncomfy that will take it if I get to Friday).

Sleep sounds marvellous, have already lounged about quite happily most of the afternoon Grin I was worried that I've been relaxing and sleeping a bit too much and baby was just too comfy in there and it would never happen Wink
