I went for a consultant appointment yesterday morning at 40+1 and she did a sweep and found I was already 4cm's dilated and looked like I was already in labour, she told me to expect to be back in hospital at some point yesterday but nearly 24 hours later nothing is happening. had a brown bloody show this morning and period type back pain for a few days but thats it. Sad
Should I be worried?

From what I remember and have read, perhaps this is just a slow labour? Am sure someone will be along soon with better advice but didnt want to leave you unanswered! Sounds like things are going the right way anyway, good luck and I hope you have your baby soon x

I don't think it's worrying unless your waters have broken, then they will monitor & ensure the baby is out within a set timescale. You are on your way though! Good luck x

Thanks, no my waters haven't gone yet. I was induced with DD at 40+14 and went from 0-10cm in 3 hours so never had any of this waiting round when I knew something was happening.
Never thought I would be hoping for pain to start Smile

It's not that uncommon to be 4cms for a while after you've already had a DD. Often your cervix is always a little bit open, so what for a first timer might be 1-2cms can be 3-4cms for a second timer. It likely means something is happening (and hopefully will be nice and quick once it really gets going), but try and relax and not expect the baby to come any minute as it could be a few days.

Fingers crossed for you that it all kicks off tonight.

I was the same, induced & 0-50mph in a few hrs Grin

It should mean something will happen soon, but my mw pointed out last time when I was 3cm and she did a sweep, that it could stay like that for a few days.

Teenytiny · 21/05/2011 15:03

Well um i was 3cms dilated with DD2 for 9 DAYS lol

Icanonlytry · 22/05/2011 16:31

9 days Shock ive had 3 and thats bad enough.. Had regular pains since the sweep but they have definatly got much worse this afternoon. Mainly in my back not too bad in my stomach but can definatly feel very strong tightenings that match up with the very strong lower back pains. Hope it is finaly happening...

This happened to me went on the Tuesday had sweep,
consultant said baby will be here before weekend, by the Saturday night I was calling him all the names of the day,
but then went into labour in early hours of Sunday and dd2 was here in 4 hours just made to hospital and no more, so good luck

at my NCT class the leader told us that in america where they do routine internal exams, quite a high proportion of women are up to 4cm dilated from 36 weeks. It could have been that maybe?

Same thing happened to me with DS. I left hospital 4-5cm dilated after a sweep and bloody show when it became obvious nothing more was going to happen. It was 4 more days before my waters went and contractions started. I arrived at the hospital less than an hour later and was already 8cm. I think as others have said I was just in very slow labour and had been slowly dilating (thankfully pain free!) the whole time.

Fingers crossed things have started happening for you!
