Just wondering if I should take my hospital bag with me. First baby so no idea how long my labour will be or if I might go early. I have period type pains a couple of times a day not sure if thats a sign that things are moving.

Where are you going and how are you travelling? I'd probably sling the bag in the car (had I been the sort of person who was organised enough to have a bag and thought about it at 35 weeks), but only if I was going a significant distance and not if I was going by public transport. Not because I think you'll need it, but because if you're worrying it will give you peace of mind.

Personally, I took my notes with me from about 36 weeks if I was travelling more than a couple of hours away from home, but nothing else.

doireallywant3 · 15/04/2011 13:01

congratulations! how far away will you be from home?
I'm 36 weeks today and staying with friends tomorrow night (I live in London and they live in Brighton). I hadn't given it a second thought till I read this! I've also been having a few of those kinds of pains most days for a week or so now but as this is my 2nd baby i've not paid too much attention to them.
I would say if it makes you feel more comfortable then you should take a scaled down version of your hosp bag (def take your notes regardless). I'm sure most 1st babies are late (mine was 10 days late, only 5% come on their dd). have you seen the MW recently? do you know if the head is engaged at all? I'm only going to put myself on high alert once I've had my show (last time I had the show a week or 2 before anything happened).
Chill and have a lovely weekend!

going about 2 hours away. Not packed bag yet but have most of the stuff to go in it and a list all written. Saw my midwife last week and she put in my notes I'm 1/5 engaged but since then have had a lot of heaviness low down so think baby has probably moved further down.

I had to stay away overnight for work when I was 36 weeks. I took my hospital notes and that was it. If it makes you feel better, have your bag packed at home so that your dp can bring it (along with car seat etc if you need one!) should the very unlikely happen.

Secondtimelucky · 15/04/2011 13:27

If you are only going two hours away, and things kick off quickly enough that you can't get home, I doubt you will have the chance to use anything in your hospital bag anyway! Personally, I'd just take the notes, but as I said, if it gives you peace of mind take a small hospital bag.

I went away in week 35 and took hospital bag and notes had room, so didn't see any harm, and I was only going a hour and half away. I didn't need it but I did however go into labour on the Sunday after our return on the Saturday.

nunnie · 15/04/2011 14:13

Hang on what do you people put in your hospital bags? Mine contains sleepsuit and vest for the baby and nappies, maternity pads for myself and a change of clothes for myself, the rest in in my overnight bag. All the stuff in my hospital bag was needed or baby would have been pretty cold otherwise, only thing I didn't need was my clothes and maternity pads straightaway as had to have an EMCS.
I would not have made it back to my local hospital let alone home first, as it was I arrived pushing.
If you have room my adive is take it, what harm can it do?

spiggy · 15/04/2011 14:41

I'm 37 weeks on Wed and going away for 2 nights on Sunday for work (to London from the NE). All I'm taking are my notes, tens, camera and one set of clothes for baby. I can't take too much as I will be travelling on the train & I don't want to have to carry a heavy bag. I have got friends in London who I can send shopping if I need anything though! I will be keeping my legs fingers firmly crossed that nothing starts up though Grin

I have been checking out maternity units in London just in case so I know where to go and what facilities to expect if I need it.

RibenaBerry · 15/04/2011 15:17

Nunnie - people put all sorts of stuff in hospital bags. Pillows, lipbalms, ipods, aromatherapy oils, socks, snacks, drinks, TENS machines. I have seen people who claim to struggle to get it all into two holdalls.

quasimodo123 · 15/04/2011 15:28

If I were you I would! Unless you have easy access to shops and people able to run out for you!

I went away for 3 nights at 34 weeks and 1 at 35+4. My waters went on Monday eve at 36 weeks (I was at home) which resulted in an overnight stay in hospital being told i was going to be induced on tues night and then the consultant changing his minds. Now booked in for induction on monday at 37 weeks unless anything happens sooner. Luckily I had my bag etc with me when i was away but if my waters had gone a few days earlier would have been a bit caught out!!

quasimodo123 · 15/04/2011 15:29

forgot to say this is my first!

nunnie · 15/04/2011 18:45

Really Ribena? That is very organised, think I did have lipbalm in mine actually but nothing else on your list. I could probably fit mine in a large handbag.

scaryfairy28 · 15/04/2011 19:12

The list of stuff ive got to put in mine is massive!! Could probably take less stuff on a two week holiday and I only live 10mins from the hospital!!

Gosh I barely had anything in my hospital bag (we were planning a homebirth so didn't put much thought into it). Dp brought in more things we needed since he had to go home every night anyway.

japhrimel · 17/04/2011 22:41

At least have a seperate overnight bag ready with your notes. I didn't pack my bag at that stage as didn't think I'd need it and then had to stay in hospital overnight for monitoring and didn't even have a washbag!

scaryfairy28 · 18/04/2011 20:51

Didn't take it just my notes but have had funny pains today so have panicked and bought bag and packed it!
