My private GBS test has shown up positive (interestingly, the one which was done on the NHS was negative). DS was admitted to SCBU for a week following delivery partly due to an infection which they never managed to pinpoint, and I am very keen to avoid a repeat experience.
I am having an elective c-section (for unrelated reasons) at 39 weeks (3 weeks away). My hospital have assured me that there will be no need for any treatment due to the positive GBS result as I will be given antibiotics during my section anyway. However, DS was born by c-section (albeit after I'd reached fully dilated and forceps had failed) and still got an infection. I'm also concerned that the baby won't get enough antibiotics - surely with a c-section the baby will be out within 5-10 minutes and so at most is going to have had maybe 15 minutes of antibiotics (would the antibiotic even reach the baby this quickly?), not the 4 hours they recommend if you're having a vaginal delivery?
Any advice? Should I insist on IV antibiotics 4 hours before my section? Hopsital seemed to think that this was totally unecessary.
Thanks in advance.
