Hi all - I'm due in 3 weeks with my second - my DS arrived in 6 hours and I'm told to expect the second labour to be quicker but I wondered if this is really always the case? Has anyone experienced longer labour 2nd time around??

Me but it was a quicker start if that makes sense. My DD was born in 2 hours and 5 minutes and my DS had the potential to be quicker, I actually arrived at the hospital pushing. But he was brow and stuck fast so after 3 and half hours of pushing I was taken to theatre for an EMCS.

But if he had been correctly positioned then he may well have come put much quicker than DD, the midwives when I arrived said they were expecting him to appear in no more than 30 minutes.

Not sure if that helps you though sorry, didn't want to run read and run.

mine was (DS1 about 28 hrs, DS2 2 hrs!) but DS3 was about 6 hours - thank god as I went into labour while I was on the school run.....
Think you can't predict really IME

irishqueen · 28/03/2011 11:53

My first was about 10 hrs , second 1hr 32 mins and third 55mins lol. With 2 and 3 I went straight from no symptoms to waters popping and full blown contractions. Good luck

maxpower · 28/03/2011 12:36

mine was - 36hrs with DC1 ending in emcs, 2h11mins with DC2

2nd time round was like irish queen - went from nothing, waters broke & full on contractions started 10 mins later

Elsjas · 28/03/2011 14:01

First was 7 hours. Second was 2 hours.

notnowbernard · 28/03/2011 14:05

Not in my experience. But I think dd2 was OP.

Pigleychez · 28/03/2011 18:16

DD1 was 27 hours. Induced, failure to dilate, hormone drip, Back to back, shoulder dystosia, turned with vontouse the forceps birth.

DD2 waters breaking to 10 cm in 2 hours. Back to back, vontouse, born stargazing. Total 6 hours.

ChasingSquirrels · 28/03/2011 18:19

not always, but in general.
my stats - ds1 2hrs, ds2 - 15 mins.

clarkland · 28/03/2011 20:05

OMG currently overdue with No.2 . Now I'm really worried about making it to the hospital on time. What do you do when it's that quick and you've got another DC to consider and a 25 minute trip to hospital and support is an hour away?

Phee96 · 28/03/2011 20:11

I had a 6 hour labour with DC1 and a 9 hour labour with DC2 14 months later. I think it's because I was slightly less mobile the second time around

PanicMode · 28/03/2011 20:12

clarkland - have the baby in the bathroom ;0). You'll be fine, I'm sure - I'm a great believer in your body not letting you go into full on labour until you're feeling 'safe' - ie your cover for your DC is on the way or in situ. (That's what happened with my fourth - I had no cover as he was 2 weeks early, and was having twinges. Once I finally thought that this was probably it, and called backup in the form of my neighbour, the second that she was here, the contractions came on REALLY fast and strong and I only just got to the hospital 20 mins away - but I did make it - my waters broke as I got to the door of the delivery suite and he was born 3 minutes later!!)

Mine have all got progressively quicker - my first was over 36 hours with every intervention going, eventually born with the last try of the ventouse (EMCS was next)

#2 5 hours from first twinge to arrival
#3 3 hours
#4 about 30 minutes!

Tillyscoutsmum · 28/03/2011 20:12

My first was 18 hours

My second was 4 days Shock. He was back to back and 10lb 5oz though

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 28/03/2011 20:17

First was 7 hours, second was an hour and nearly born in the car park due to a 40 minute drive to the hospital - when I rang the birthing unit 15mins away to ask if I could go there as things seemed to be happening fast they said no I was high risk due to StrepB and go to the hospital!

AnathemaDevice · 29/03/2011 22:42

Both of my labours were 6 1/2 hours. Pushing stage was quicker second time around though- 12 minutes for DD, compared to 19 minutes with DS.

PenguinArmy · 29/03/2011 22:45

'Is second time always quicker?'

I bloody well hope so

ilikeyoursleeves · 29/03/2011 22:52

Ds 1 4 days from first contraction to delivery.
Ds2 6 hours in total. Delivered on bathroom floor as couldn't get to hospital in time!

TheSydenhamSet · 29/03/2011 22:56

ds1 was 5 hrs
dd2 was 2 hrs.

a friend of mine, dd1 30 hrs or so
dd4, 40 minutes! and her husband delivered the baby as the midwives didn't arrive on time (arranged home delivery).
