high blood pressure at 36+ weeks

I am 36 + 3 and was referred to the day assessment unit yesterday as my BP was 160/110. I have no other symptoms of pre-eclampsia. I discharged myself last night after 6 hours of lying about (seriously, the place was doing my BP no good at all).

They say if my bp is still elevated today then they will probably keep me in.

SO - anyone have any experience to share? am I likely to be induced soon (hopeful emoticon). I was hoping for a home birth/water birth - now presuming that is out of the question. I really hope to avoid a C-section - is this a risk? or will I just be put on medication and sent home?

Hi buffy, i had high b/p with dd - it started about 24 weeks. I was monitored daily by midwives, and was in and out of hospital for checks, but it went up and down. At 38 weeks it stayed up, so they admitted me, and after 24hrs it was still very high (bed rest at home would surely have been better than listening to the woman next to me have contractions through the night, and then be woken at 6 to have blood pressure taken). Any way, they induced me, and due to problems, i ended up having an emergency c section.
I would think c-section really is a last resort, they may just keep you in for a while, home birth may not be an option now as they will need to monitor you closely.

hi, i expect they'll watch you closely and try to get you a bit further along.If they suggest induction try not to worry, it won't be your homebirth but the most important thing is that you and your baby are safe and well in the world. good luck.

DOn't worry..it will only make BP worse...I had high bp from about 24 weeks onwards..referred to Day Assessment Unit for weekly checks and had one 24 hour spell in hospital under observation at about 32 weeks.I think BP peaked at 155/105 and they were very worried about Pre Ec but I had no other symptoms and went into labour a day early and had a normal birth and a beautiful ds. Funniest thing was day after I gave birth, the DAU rang me at home to say my last blood tests ( taken 3 days before I went into labour) showed some dreadful reading which meant something awful and I should rush into hospital to be induced. I pointed out that I'd given birth in their hospital the day before..there was an embarrassed silence, they said congrats and hung up!

Am due to go back tomorrow, if still elevated to start me on meds.

not keen on staying in hospital too long - everyone I spoke to today said "oh you'll get a lovely rest!" that's right because it is so STRESS FREE being on a noisy crowded ward with lots of other women going into labour. Hospital is no place to have a baby if you ask me.

Ooh, there you are. Was just having a look for you and decided they must have kept you locked up. Glad to hear you got time off for good behaviour; now you are feeling less stressed, what is this I hear about dd watching SCOOBY DOO ffs??

funnily enough Pruni I have THREE pairs of earplugs in my hospital bag...
the Justin thing was a dream OK and I must say I woke up feeling exceptionally soiled and queasy to say the least.
am home till tomorrow at least. I am a serial self discharger but I fear I might not manage it three days running....
funnily enough I am feeling very serene. Is Scooby Doo not suitable for a 2.5 year old then? you see there's so much I don't know

Just keep calm, dear, I can hear your knickers twisting as we speak. Do you think we can completely madden you by following you from thread to thread, expressing alarm if you appear to be getting excited / annoyed / anything above comatose? Now type slowly and don't worry your little pregnant head about Scooby Doo now, I am sure it is quite appropriate for little dd to be watching hippie throwbacks and a talking dog pursue criminals with links to the occult. I think Maria Montessori recommended it in fact.

she LOVES scooby doo as it happens. she wiggles her fingers and says "what's SCARY on scooby doo??"
nd you know exactly where you can stick Maria Montessori don't you??
