how long did you bleed for after birth?

i've been bleeding for a month now, though it's no longer at all heavy - just spotting. DD was born on New Year's Day in a very rapid natural delivery. I did have a second degree tear and wonder whether some of the bleeding is from that, but it seems to have healed well, as far as i can tell.
is it normal for post partum bleeding to last this long?

I was about 6-8 weeks for all 3 of mine - maybe just make sure (if you're not already) to take some iron and multivitamins?

supergreenuk · 28/01/2011 09:37

8 weeks here. It got light then heavy light then stop start stop start. I was so fed up with it so I understand. It feels like it will never stop but it does. Try not to worry.

togarama · 28/01/2011 09:42

Just over 2 weeks but I think that 6 weeks is the average.

B52s · 28/01/2011 11:08

6 weeks DS1, 4 weeks DS2.

Lainey1981 · 28/01/2011 16:58

5 weeks here, though was very light after a couple of days unless had been particularly active

6 weeks- felt like forever, and I was anaemic so make sure you aren't, as I just felt so washed out and tired (that could have been the newborn mind you...)

greenbeanie · 28/01/2011 19:01

6-8 wks with all 3 of mine. Like others have said I would take some iron/multivits for your own wellbeing. If you find the bleeding suddenly gets heavier, lots of clots or strong odour it could be a sign of retained products or infection which would need checking out with gp.

lilmamma · 28/01/2011 23:38

bout 4-6 weeks.

Longtallsally · 30/01/2011 09:14

About 6 weeks with my first. Heavy for a long time - 2 - 3 weeks, and became anaemic.

I told my best friend who was also expecting, and she bought up all the maternity pads in Boots! Then she only bled for a week!

With my second it was only a week or so too, if that, so it can vary.

Georgimama · 30/01/2011 09:18

6 weeks - like a heavy period for 2 weeks and then quite watery and light for the rest of the time. I had a tear too but the bleeding was definitely not from the injury but from the uterus/vagina IYSWIM.

2 weeks both times

Lavitabellissima · 30/01/2011 09:31

10 weeks exactly, It really got me down. I had a c section too so, Dr said it looked like I'd gone straight from post birth bleeding to a period Sad

ItFelt like forever but it did end. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

DS was born on 2 January and I'm still bleeding, too. I just put it down to doing a bit too much (not like I have a choice - I have 3 other DCs). I read today that it's not unusual to go on for 6 weeks - I was planning on mentioning at 6 week appointment with GP, if I was still bleeding by then.

thegauntlet · 30/01/2011 19:49

10 days, with 2 light afterwards- I was back in the swimming pool on day 13 Smile
If it helps... I had a natural 3rd stage, which I planned, as I wanted to have a shorter bleed time afterwards. ( syntometrine and syntocinon injections lengthen the bleed time)
But i also had a post partum haemorrhage ( relatively minor) which is the price you pay for that.

porcamiseria · 30/01/2011 22:42

yes, mine lasted for bloody ages

Sarahlou8 · 31/01/2011 21:48

I'm really surprised some of you bled for so long. I bled for 2 weeks, stopped, then started again with a vengeance a few days later, this lasted till week 5.

It turned out I had an infection due to 'retained membranes' and had to have antibiotics. The bleeding stopped pretty quickly after that.

Doctor wrote on my notes 'blood loss slow to resolve' and said he would expect a normal delivery to resolve within 2 weeks.
