Bloody show????

To start from the beginning, me and DH had sex the other night. Shortly after I felt a non painful contraction and the whole day after I kept getting contractions.

Then just before I went to bed there was blood, about 1-2 tablespoons of it came out in one go.
I drove to hospital where they checked baby's heartbeat which was fine and then they made me an appointment to come back in the morning for another check.
When i came back I was still bleeding slightly and had to stay in hospital for observation. Around midday the bleeding seemed to stop and I had to stay in for another 24 hours just in case.
I had contractions all this time, quite heavy all morning and everyone thought I was gonna have baby very soon, but then they slowed down and when I woke this morning they were gone.
I wanted to go home and just relax for a couple of days and feel like I was healing if that makes sense, but now that I've been discharged I have very weak contractions again and there is some blood again, only this time it's more like a "show" all mucusy and the blood is darker, more black.

When I was bleeding in the night it was bright red, fresh looking blood and no slime.

At the hospital they told me that some women just have mormal bleeding as a show (I didn't with my two other labours) but that it can also be the placenta coming off the uterus wall, which can be very dangerous for both mum and baby.

So now I'm a nervous wreck. Barely daring to go to the toilet just in case I see blood again and thinking every time baby moves there will be another gush of blood like the other night.

I thought third time around would be a breeze but it seems to be the opposite...

Not sure I have any advise, but I hated to see this unanswered. Mine was mucusy than bloody but who knows. Do you have an ob/gyn that could check for you?

missjulie · 28/01/2011 01:50

Likewise, Hoping.
Mine was mucusy too, and quite a lot of it!
I agree, that perhaps, just to be on the safe side, you should get checked out. xx

if the blood is darker/ black it is probably 'old' blood that had just been retained from the initial 'bleed', not anything new to worry about.

if you are still getting plenty of movement etc i would try not to worry unless you get fresh bleeding.

as ever though, if you are worried or concerned, go and get checked over to put your mind at rest. x

fwiw, mucousy does sound more like a 'show', but don't know how far along you are...

(and if it helps at all, i had bloody show for two weeks before i went into labour with one of mine - hideous bh all the time, having to stop and breathe through, was convinced i was going to give birth any second, but nada...)

Second pregnancy i had a bloody show, for no apparent reason. I hope it's the same for you

hastingsmum · 28/01/2011 11:29

Thanks all! Forgot to say, I'm 39 + 5, so nearly there, although both my other two pregnancies went to 41 weeks so that's what I've been aiming for the whole time Wink

Incredibly scary to bleed in pregnancy, and completely took my by surprise so very late on.

I hope I get a few days to recover, if I go into labour whilst still feeling like this I think it will be a more scary experience.

madwoman, yes that sounds a bit similar to what I felt.
