Cycle post birth

My original cycles was 28 days even after having DD.
What I can't remember and was hoping somone might be able to help.
Is after the first period post birth should your cycle return to normal, or does it take a while longer to establish a normal cycle again?

Not breastfeeding.

Mine didn't return to normal for a whole year, it would start, 3 days then stop 2 days, then start again for another 3 to 4 days - really annoying. Then after a year totally back to normal and less heavy than before.
