How quickly did a sweep work for you if at all?

Just wondered what the time span was for you if it worked? I understand this is very individual but can it be an instant thing? Due to have one on Friday if I get that far Hmm

I had one at 11 am and went into labout at 1am the next morning. However I was 3cm when they did the sweep.

beckie90 · 16/01/2011 13:51

i was 2cm dilated when she did the sweep and was convinced it would work, i had my show afterwards, but it didnt work for me, got induced 5 days later

CointreauVersial · 16/01/2011 13:53

Worked within a couple of days - well, it might have been the threat of an elective cs scheduled for the following morning!

NannyState · 16/01/2011 13:54

I had two - at 41 weeks and 42 weeks - and neither did a thing. I was induced at 42+5 and had my baby a day later.

deemented · 16/01/2011 13:55

I had a sweep at 4.30pm, went home and was back at the hospital by 6pm having contractions every three minutes. DD was born at 12.55am the next morning.

CrystalQueen · 16/01/2011 13:57

Was due to get one at 41 weeks. MW examined me and said there was no point as cervix closed. Went into labour 4.5 days later anyway.

ihavenewsockson · 16/01/2011 13:58

DS1- didn't work. was induced 4 days later.

DS2- had a sweep at 2:30pm, started contractions by midnight. Had DS2 at 8pm the following evening.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 16/01/2011 14:01

started getting contractions about 18 hours after a sweep. it was another 24hours before labour was properly established though, and a further 10 before dd2 arrived.

midwife was very sceptical about it working, as my cervix was not favourable at the time.

CardyMow · 16/01/2011 14:05

Ask me after Wednesday - MW has promised to give me a sweep then when I'll be 40+3. (Due today).

daisystone · 16/01/2011 14:37

Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I went in for one when I was 40+2 but didn't have my daughter until I was 40+11.

TettyLouBar · 16/01/2011 15:37

Thanks ladies, it sounds like a complete unknown quantity! I wont pin my hopes on one working! DC1 early stages of labour started naturally on 40+5 and had her on 40+8. And Friday will be my 40+5, so maybe I'll have a bit of luck and have some movement by then anyway?!? Hmm

pinkclouds · 16/01/2011 15:41

I had a sweep my last 2 DC both 40+5. Within 40 minutes of sweep I was in full blown labour.
Good luck.

goodasgold · 16/01/2011 15:41

My ds was born 6 hours after my sweep.

TettyLouBar · 16/01/2011 18:52

pink clouds I WISH!

I had 3 and none of them worked sorry! I was induced at 42 weeks. Worth a try though!

angie85 · 20/01/2011 03:35

with my first baby i had a sweep at 41 weeks and had her 14 hrs after my second i had a sweep at just gone 40 weeks and had her 3 hrs later but my 3rd i had a sweep at 40 weeks and was already 3cm dialated but went on to have a further 3 more sweeps and still nothing i can now gladly say i got induced on monday 17th jan after being 10 days pass due date and midwife burst my waters and i gave birth to a beautifull baby boy 59 mins later

so as u can see all pregnancies are diff and its all depending if ur baby really wants to come out

but good luck with ur sweep and i hope it works for u

WhatSheSaid · 20/01/2011 04:12

Had 3. None of them worked. Were at 38 and 39 weeks though - probably work better if your body is almost ready to go into labour anyway.

Livinginoz · 20/01/2011 04:31

I had 5! Shock
Went into labour 40+9, 24 hours after the 5th one.

Make of that what you will!

PogueMahone · 20/01/2011 05:58

It was different for each:
dc1 had 3 sweeps, nothing happened, eventually induced
dc2: 2 sweeps, gave birth day after 2nd sweep
dc3: 1 sweep, gave birth later that day

Good luck!

My book says that half of women go into labour within 48 hours of a sweep.

splodge77 · 04/02/2011 14:44

latent labour (irregular contractions) started 12 hours after my sweep, these went on for 27 hours (!) before proper labour started. 12 hours later my son was born.

Quenelle · 04/02/2011 15:02

Had one at 6pm, went into labour at 1am. Think labour had already started when they did the sweep though.

duchesse · 04/02/2011 15:03

Not at all.
