Water Birth and GBS

Hi there

I am a strep B carrier & so will need antibiotics during labour....however, I really want a water birth!

The consultant I spoke to a few weeks ago said it should be okay but I'll probably need to hang one arm out of the pool so I can have the antibiotics...

However, other people have told me that I prob wont be allowed a water birth if I need the drugs.

Has anyone had any experience of this at all?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I pushed for a waterbirth and was told categorically that I couldn't as the need to intervene with IV anti-biotics automatically put me in the 'not low risk'category. I was told that if i really pushed then I may find a hospital willing to do it but that I would have to have the canula re-inserted every time I needed another dose of the abs. I think it really depends on your hospitals policy.

It depends on the policy of your Hospital. You can have a waterbirth and IV ABs where I am, but it differs depending on hospital policy.

Can you get the consultant to write something in your notes to say that it shouldn't be a problem?
