When did your partner go back to work?

Hi, I am due to give birth any second. Being induced tomorrow if nothing happens before.

I am really interested to know how soon peoples husbands/partners returned to work. My DH will not be able to take much time off as he runs his own business.

I was wondering what the least amount of time someone had taken off after the birth - particularly for a first child?

My dp went back to work the day after DD1 was born.

She came 2 weeks early and his v mean boss didn't let him take his paternity leave early.

He did have the time off when she was 2 weeks old however, and my lovely mum virtually moved in to help me :)

whingeomatic · 29/11/2010 12:04

dd1 born Friday am, he went back to work on Monday as he had a new job couldn't take any time off...

with dd2 he had a weeks holiday & 1 week paternity leave which was bliss as he did all the school runs while I stayed at home with dd2 :)

Meglet · 29/11/2010 12:07

XP took 10 days off after my em cs Sad. I wouldn't recommend it.

He had 2 weeks off after my planned cs. But that time round my parents helped me for a month Smile.

lollipopshoes · 29/11/2010 12:10

when we had dd2 and ds we were self employed so he didn't really take any time off, but rearranged his hours so he could be at home more/when we needed him.

This time round he's planning on taking 2 weeks off.

manchestermummy · 29/11/2010 12:52

DH has just gone back after two weeks off, but for the next two weeks is taking two days off a week to help with DD1 who is 3.1 and a handful! Having said that, DD1 is actually less of a handful when he's not around!

OnlyWantsOne · 29/11/2010 13:03

DP is taking a week leave as he isnt entitled to paternity leave.

Greenmantle · 29/11/2010 13:50

For DS, DH took 2 weeks paternity and then 2 weeks annual leave (he had carried over loads from the previous year) so we had a lovely month together!

DC2 is due in February but DH has just been interviewed for a new job and if he gets it then I'm not sure he'll be able to take more than the statutory leave. He'd originally planned to take 4 to 6 weeks...

HecateQueenOfWitches · 29/11/2010 13:51

think he had a few days off after ds1. the morning after ds2 was born, he was in a meeting and came to fetch us after that (self employed. no time off at all.)

Needaname · 29/11/2010 20:22

3.5 weeks including Easter bank holidays. I was very grateful. 3 weeks this time we hope.

hildathebuilder · 30/11/2010 09:01

my dh had about 2 days. then he went to see his mum on compassionate leave as his step dad just died

Ooopsadaisy · 30/11/2010 09:04

3 days with ds

5 days with dd.

Glad to get rid of him both times.

I believe there is a law or something about paternity leave these days but I don't know what it is.

Don't worry about it yet, see how you feel afterwards (if the law let's you).

Bucharest · 30/11/2010 09:07

Day after I came home from hospital.

No such thing as paternity leave here.

Madhouse41 · 30/11/2010 10:55

I had DD on Thursday night and DH back to work Monday! Again, self employed and if he doesn't work he doesn't get paid. DD is my 4th and is now 2 weeks old and DH does take my 3 DSs to school every day on his way to work. God knows when I shall be back on the morning school run!!!

rodformyownback · 30/11/2010 11:39

All these posts make me realise how lucky we've been with DH's time off!
with ds1 he had an epic 5 weeks - as he was leaving one job and starting another he took 2 weeks' remaining annual leave, 2 weeks paternity leave and arranged to start his new job after a week unpaid / unemployed. Was lucky as DS1 was 2 weeks late and had an emcs that took a while to recover from.
I'm now 41+1 wks pg with DS2; DH will start his 2 weeks paternity leave when I have the baby. Given baby is so late and DH now works in a school, he will only have to go back for a few days before Christmas holidays. Bliss!

suiledonne · 30/11/2010 11:43

DD1 - He had to go to work the evening we came home from the hopsital.

DD2 - born on a Thursday night so had Fri off and the weekend and went back to work Mon.

Is self-employed so if he doen't work we have no income

Ragwort · 30/11/2010 11:46

The next day - he took the day off that I had the baby (EMCS - traumatic Grin) - I was kept in hospital for six days so he went to work; took a day off to bring us home (I think), maybe one other day - can't really remember, it was a long time ago.

DrewsGirl · 30/11/2010 13:30

I was really lucky, DH had 1 week compassionate as DS and i were both ill. Then he went back to work and my mum came for a week then he had 2 weeks paternity, i couldnt of coped without them.

Let us know when the baby has arrived :) x

LouMacca · 30/11/2010 13:46

My DH had one week off work after I had our twins. When he went back my Mum came round every day for 6 weeks (to make me lunch and have a general tidy round) so I was very lucky. She then booked a 3 month holiday in Spain Grin

fel1x · 30/11/2010 13:49

One week each time.
Unfortunately with DS1 his week off started on the Monday when I went into hospital to be induced. DS wasnt born till Thursday am and we got home from hspital late Friday night, so DH only had the weekend at home with us before going back to work on the Monday!

Worked out better with DS2 as he was born quickly and we had a full week off together

NinkyNonker · 30/11/2010 14:48

3 wks. Only cause we work in education so he was off on hols anyway, dd born beginning of Aug. Was awesome.

theborrower · 30/11/2010 21:14

DH took his full paternity leave of 2 weeks, but as I had an EMCS on a Tuesday (they let him have the Tuesday off!) and didn't go home until Friday night, he went back to work for the Wednesday and Thursday and started his leave on the Friday.

He then had to go back to work for 2 weeks (busy time at his work and they're not allowed holidays) before taking 2 weeks holiday which were already planned. I'm really glad he did - not only because he got to spend lots more time with the baby, but because I still needed help at this point.

Funky2sarah · 01/12/2010 09:10

My Hubby had his 2 wks paternity, I had DS in the Wednesday and was kept in for monitoring (High BP/low iron levels - aneamic) he took leave from the Monday. The 3 days I was in hospital, he had an understanding boss that let him finish early and come over to me mid afternoon,he then did some work in the evenings once he went home.
Dont know about number 2 - not PG yet!! lol
xx

My DH only took a couple of days with my first, he was due to take longer but was all use! He took longer with my second so that he could look after DC1.

mousesma · 01/12/2010 14:28

5wks, 3wks fully paid paternity and 2wks annual leave. I don't think I could have established BF without his help during this time. It meant I could concentrate on feeding while DH made tea, brought me meals, burped and changed DD etc.

It also meant that I could take an afternoon nap between feeds while he looked after DD so I could catch up on sleep.
