Does it bleed a lot when you perform an epsiotomy?

I'm not a midwife but I had an episiotomy and it looked like there was loads of blood, ds had it all over his head and down the side of his face but on my notes it said total blood loss was only 300mls which isn't a huge amount. I think they like to stitch as soon as possible afterwards to stop the bleeding.
