Hello,

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I had an episiotomy with a forceps birth nine days ago and so far I'm healing well.

The only thing is I have a small cut which doesn't seem to have closed near my bottom. I know it hasn't closed as when I wipe (sorry if TMI) it's bleeding (only a little bit). I have had a look and the blood is coming from the cut as I can see it's open.

Do I need to do anything about this? What do I say to my midwife? I'm just a bit concerned and would welcome any advice on this one.

Thanks

Always worth asking the midwife to have a look. Sometimes they don't look at your bits after the first visit - doesn't mean you can't ask them to do so.

Is the open bit continuous with the episiotomy cut? If it is separate, and right on the edge of your anus, then it may be an anal fissure. The only treatment AFAIK is to keep it clean, ensure you never get constipated or have to strain or pass a big poo, and just wait for it to heal.

If I were you I'd go to GP ASAP. If it is open and bleeding you don't want to get any infection there - which then might spread to the epi wound and compromise the healing there. If you haven't already, I'd have a regular look with a mirror - that way you know how things are progressing and if things worsen. Agree with keeping it clean - I'm showering after every poo. Forget the MW - my MW cheerfully infomred me that my tears were not infected and were healing just fine - well I'm still infected having finished 4 courses of antibiotics and everything is still open. Good luck, hope you heal and congratulations on your DC X

Thanks guys, I mentioned it to the midwife who said that the cut had healed. This tallied up as I went to the loo this morning and there was no bleeding which was a relief.

I'll give it another day or so and if I get more bleeding I'll go to the GP.

I know exactly how you feel - I had the same birth experience as you 9 days ago and had a similar thing with the scar. I went to gp on Monday and he said it looked fine, and I haven't had any more problems. Hope yours
OK too.
