Head engaged - doesn't mean labour is close does it?

I am 37+5. I had my 38 week appointment yesterday and the midwife confirmed the baby's head is engaged. I am getting sharp pains in my pelvis/groin every now and then but otherwise no indication this baby is ready to be born. He still doesn't feel that low or heavy although sometimes at night it is harder for me to walk.

I have had no Braxton Hicks at all.

I feel like the commencement of labour is weeks and weeks away, despite people telling me it could be any minute!

Anyone had similar experiences? Can labour come out of the blue if the head is engaged or do you usually have an idea that you are close?

Thanks!

Hi, engagement is always a positive sign but not necessarily one that means labour is imminent or even close. My friend's LO was engaged from about 35 weeks and she went to 40+3 so unfortunately it's not always a sign. I know the waiting is frustrating but hang in there! :)

Thanks Dreemagurl. I honestly think it will be another good 2-3 weeks before he puts in an appearance. It doesn't feel like he is ready yet. But yes, it certainly is frustrating. How can 2 weeks feel like 2 months???

Another one here - my dd's head was engaged at 37 weeks but she was born at 42.

Hang in there!

If it is your first one, baby starts engaging weeks and weeks ahead.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. This is my first. I didn't think it meant I was close. Wishful thinking I guess. I am still working anyway so it would be a tad inconvenient if he arrived now anyway!
