Encouraging stories about babies actually being smaller than 38 week growth scans predicted please

I am 38 weeks today with ds3. I had a growth scan yesterday and the baby was estimated to be a tad under 8lb with 2 weeks to go. So they are now panicking and going on about induction or c section at 40 weeks as he could be a 9lb'er at term, 91/2lb if I go over.

I personally am not too worried about this and am happy to go for the natiral delivery I want - really don't want to be induced or have a c section unless really necessary. The reason they go on about it (consultants) is that I had a shoulder dystocia with my first (8lb 4) and am only 5ft. (I personally think this was a bed dystocia and more likely due to mismanaged labour, bad positioning, than the size of the baby). Was very dramatic and scary but luckily ds1 was fine in the end after resusitation and SCBU. Ds2 birth was quick and easy, I stayed standing up the whole time and he came out easily - tho was only 7lb 14 in fairness to them (came on his due date).

Anyway, the midwives don't seem bothered but the doctors want to classify me as high risk (which I don't want as want to go in MLU) and are trying to get me to agree to 40 week induction/possible ELCS if I don't go into labour before then. I think this is overkill.

Has anyone else been predicted a big baby at term who was actually smaller - am holding out for this Grin

Argh, that's shocking! Are you at the same hospital this time?

I'm going to Macclesfield, they don't have a MLU as such but are very very big on natural/active birth. The MW I saw last week was actually the one who delivered my DS - it was a huge comfort to see her again and chat about what happened at his birth.

My DH's lasting memory is of watching his little grey baby being rubbed down and resuscitated too - also had Apgar of 1.

I don't remember very much at all :(

At 38 weeks my baby was a whole pound lighter than appeared on the scan just a few hours earlier.

At 37 week scan was told DC1 was looking like at least "an 8lb er"
was born a week later at bang on 6lbs!

Hi preghead, hope you're doing OK - just wantd to resurrect this thread to let you know I had my baby on Saturday after induction at 40+2 - he was 10lb 6oz Shock but managed a vaginal delivery without so much as a graze!

Had an epidural and two very understanding and amazing midwives, which I don't think I could have managed without as it was HARD work. But he's here, no shoulder dystocia, gentle calm birth and best result I could have asked for really.

Of course there's the small matter of the growth scan predicting him to be a whole pond SMALLER than he was, but you don't want to her that do you Wink Grin

Best wishes x

Oh that's great news congratulations! Funnily enough I am in the antenatal day unit right now waiting for a doctor as had another scan this morning at 40 weeks and we seem to have shifted to the opposite problem, he hasn't grown since the 38 weeks scan and came out tidy as 7pm 15 !!! Also the fluid was grainy so they were worried about meconium but the baby was happy on the trace so am just waiting now to see what they say. Looks like we are going from induction at term because baby too big to induction at term because of static growth and this grainy fluid business! Its a rollercoaster childbirth!

Just goes to show tho, apparently I am no longer having a 9 and a half pound whopper!

dd1 was scanning at 9lb 13oz, they told me she could be a pound heaver, and i couldn't be allowed to go into labour as it would not be possible for me to deliver a 10lb 13oz baby. (short and petite, and they had broken a woman's pelvis the week before so were a bit jumpy).

so, i had elcs, and dd1 was 8lb 6oz.

vbac 1 - 8lb 6oz
vbac 2 - 9lb

i have no idea how big they told me ds1 and dd2 were going to be, as i ignored them. total tosh.
