Are second births usually quicker? And earlier?

Due DC2 in 5 weeks. DD was only 2 days over due and labour was about 5 or 6 hours from first contraction.

What are my chances for DC2 based on your experiences? Are subsequent babies usually earlier and quicker or not necessarily so?

Mine was both earlier and quicker.

Ds2 was 20 days earlier than ds1.

And labour was 4 hrs compared to 14 hours.

am now 38 weeks (tomorrow) with DC3 so i hope the pattern doesn't continue t the same degree!

Carikube · 21/08/2010 19:03

DD1 born at 39+4, 12 hours from start to finish. DD2 born at 41+0, 5 hours from start to finish. So, faster labour but not any earlier (but a lot more painful as the contractions were more intense as I dilated more quickly).

Theantsgomarching · 21/08/2010 19:08

Much quicker second time- but not sooner. Went on time on dd1 but over by 8 days on ds..Good luck!

LadySanders · 21/08/2010 19:10

ds1 born at 37 weeks

ds2 born at 42 weeks

sorry!

Bumperlicious · 21/08/2010 19:14

Not so worried about the earlier (though I will be desperate soon!) but the quicker thing is panicking me somewhat! Just feel like I have to be on the alert all the time from now on in case I don't have much time.

Earlier, no. Dc1 born at 40+5 and dc2 at 40+11. But much much quicker second time. Dd was a 26 hour labour. Ds was about 2.5 with only a 2 minute second stage. Guess which I preferred?? Grin

LittleSilver · 21/08/2010 19:29

No, not necessarily quicker or earlier IME.

pickleplusone · 21/08/2010 19:44

Second was 9 days late as opposed to 12 days late and much, much quicker. First was 12 hours, second was about 2.5 hours.

Good to be prepared that it might be quicker because I hadn't considered it at all. I just thought it'd be a long, drawn out affair again so I'd arranged for my mum to look after DD1 and she was a 3 hour drive away! It was therefore very lucky DD2 arrived at lunchtime and not in the middle of the night or I (well dh!) might have had a mad panic trying to find someone to look after her!

notnowbernard · 21/08/2010 19:46

More overdue

Longer labour

CatIsSleepy · 21/08/2010 19:47

well dd2 was a hell of a lot quicker but only because dd1 took an eternity-56 hours or something. dd2 took around 10, the first 4 of which I spent wondering if labour had actually started. dd1 was 6 days early, dd2 4 days early

good luck!

Jojay · 21/08/2010 19:47

Earlier and quicker here.

Ds1 was 6 days late, Ds2 was 3 days early.

Was in labour for days with Ds1 - Ds2 arrived in 7 hours.

cathers · 21/08/2010 19:59

Quicker but not earlier
DS1 10 days od, 5 hour labour
Ds2 14 days od, 3 hour labour, but less painful

Bumperlicious · 22/08/2010 16:43

I'm panicking that I'm not going to get any notice this time! Was driving to drop my DD off to my mum's yesterday, a 2 hour drive and thought if I go into labour now, on my own I'm screwed!

ds1: 37+0, 2 hour labour
ds2: 37-0 (a few mins), 15 min labour

SecretSlattern · 22/08/2010 16:50

DD1: 8 hours start to finish 11 days late
DS: 25 hours start to finish Hmm 10 days late
DD2: 2 hours 18 mins start to finish 9 days late

My second was without doubt, the worst. Sorry!

good question, ask me in a few weeks!!!!

smilehomebirth · 22/08/2010 21:00

I think you're less likely to go into labour if you are busy doing something that takes your concentration like driving. More likely to happen when you've got everything done and have relaxed. Less likely doesn't mean it never happens though!

pigleychez · 23/08/2010 23:23

DD1- 2 weeks overdue, 27 hours labour, Back to back.

DD2- 4 days early, 6 hours labour, Back to back.
