Just wondering how much shorter was your labour second time round (if it was shorter)? Mine was 7 1/2 hours all in first time and I'm due next Weds so just interested. Ds was 8lb 14 oz as well so I hope this one isn't too much bigger.....

hi em32, sorry just got one and not planning no more, but bumping this for you so someone who knows may come along..good luck for next week

mumtosomeone · 26/08/2005 21:02

they do say half the time!!

sweetkitty · 26/08/2005 21:02

oh half the time would be nice my first one was 4h 20 mins!

zubb · 26/08/2005 21:03

don't think it necessarily follows that the second will be heavier and a quicker labour but mine was. Ds1 was 8lb 15, but ds2 weighed in at 9lb 9 (he was a week late though)! Labour was shorter as well, but both were quick anyway.

with dd1 i got to hospital in AGONY at 5.30ish, i was 7 cm's dilated and she was born at 8.58.

With dd2 i got to hospital at 8ish in not so much agony, i was 5 cm's dilated and dd2 was born at 11.23.

Angeliz · 26/08/2005 21:05

dd1-7.2lb's
dd2-8lb's

well my one and only had to be induced with syntocin two days after due date which was also two days after my waters broke..labour took 5 hours ish and was hellish!vowed to have no drugs and be up and about..was confined to bed, attatched to drip, two straps around my huge stomach and had a whale of a time on gas and air then pethedine..only prob was pethedine ran out 30 mins before dd born and they wouldnt administer any more as she was on her way...no got the natural birth eventually anyway!!!
6lb 11oz and felt twice as big

she loves it when i tell her the extremely anmated story about it all now

Lolasmum · 26/08/2005 21:15

dd1 was 6lbs 6ozs and took 23 hours. She was 2 days late.
dd2 was 8lbs 7ozs and took approximatly 45 minutes! She was born on her due date.

It was definitely a lot easier 2nd time around. The contractions were more intense though and I didn't have any breaks in between them. But, seeing as it was for such a short period it didn't matter. The pushing stage was so much easier, and looking back at it now (6 weeks ago) it was almost enjoyable. I felt in control in comparison to with dd1.

Good luck for you for next Wednesday and I hope you enjoy it!!!!

DS1 - 15 hour labour, 4 days early, 6lb 9oz
DS2 - 2 hour labour, 4 days late, 7lb 9 oz

When I was in labour with DS2, my contractions weren't painful, just uncomfortable and it only really hurt for the last 10 mins, so this was a breeze in comparison with labour with DS1

jenkel · 26/08/2005 21:53

DD1 - 17 hours labour, induced bang on time due to complications, 7lb 10oz
DD2 - 15 hour labour, 8 days late, 9lb 12oz

Em32,
I remember there was a thread on this a little while back which got quite long indeed. I read it enough to get the general gist that while some second labours are quicker, some are longer, some the same....so no hard and fast rule seemed to exist.

My sister has had 3, all straight forward 8 hour labours. She was disappointed it didn't speed up.

It might be helpful to mentally prepare yourself for a similar labour (or longer) the next time round and then you can only be pleasantly surprised rather than disheartened when you haven't delivered after 4 hours.

Mind you, having said that, if you are having a hospital birth you want to time the transfer correctly...

god really hope it doesnt take half the time i was in labour for 3 hours with dd so wouldnt even have time to get to the hosp if i had another lol
