Hello,

As labour is impending I still haven't done a birth plan, havent got MW appointment to do this as I'm having daily hospital care....

Everything went out of the window with last one so unsure whether to bother?

I do have some bizarre preferences though,
DH doesn't want to cut cord as hecould with our first and he wants it to be "fair" thats his choice and preference I guess

Also I really want to se my placenta, is that really odd? I have no idea why morbid curiosity I guess....Can I put this on my birthplan......

YES! I did! Here's what I wrote:

"I am interested in looking at the Placenta (but don't want to eat it!!"

It was fascinating actually. They explained all about it to me. i'm glad I did.

I only did a birth plan with DC2 because I knew from the experience of having DC1 what I had/hadn't liked. Any birth plan has to be very loose and subject to change anyway so no harm in doing one. By the time I got to hospital I was in no state to communicate my wishes effectively myself so it helped lots to just have the birth plan in my maternity pack.

You can put what you like on your birthplan!
We have always asked for the cord to be left to stop pulsing before being clamped and we are always left with the placenta (homebirths) as we like to bury it: something that we just feel is right.

I have also asked for all present to shutup when baby comes out so I can be the one to discover it's sex, as opposed to someone shrieking 'oh it's a boy/girl' beofre I've even had the chance to look myself!

It's all about personal preferences: if the birth goes well there's not much reason why you shouldn't have your wishes respected. Smile

Oh OK so its not all that strange, my DH thinks its really odd that I want to see my afterbirth.......
Right then, I better get writing..
Thanks for your help Grin

I had on my birth plan that DH should be the one to tell me the sex which was lovely (though I did take a sneaky peak because it took him so bloody long to tell me!)

CakeandFineWine · 12/08/2010 12:51

That would be on mine but as I've had weekly scans since 28 weeks we know the sex :(

I photographed the placenta with dc4! It was huge, with an enormous cord, and I suddenly felt that I would never again have the opportunity to photograph such a bizarre thing, so I asked dh to photograph it (was at home, so it wasn't whisked away as it might be in the hospital I guess).

MrsGangly · 12/08/2010 13:02

My husband will be glad to see this! He took a picture of my placenta just after I had delivered it because he thought it was fascinating and wanted to look at it properly later. Doesn't sound odd to me now. Smile

I gave birth on Saturday and asked to see my placenta in the birth plan.

The midwife seemed really interested to tell me all about it!

PrettyCandles · 12/08/2010 13:14

I looked at my placenta each time. Didn't put it on the birth plan, just asked after it was out. Wish I'd thought to photograph it.

Dc1 was born with the cord tightly wound around his neck, and the marvelous midwife had to cut it while he was still inside me. With dc2 dh was offered to cut the cord but came over all squeamish and refused, but with dc3 he surprised himself and cut it.

The 'fairness' seems odd to me. The LO won't care about it, and it's not something that your dh will have many chances to do.

I had a good old nosey at both of my placentas, they are strangely interesting. Think my DH thought it was odd though... or that I was odd Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 12/08/2010 13:31

I asked to see the placenta, she showed me it and talked me through it as it was being delivered. TBH I lost interest a bit - was cuddling and feeding DD at the time, but was glad to get the chance.

CakeandFineWine · 12/08/2010 14:00

wow really not all that strange then,
Don't think I'll be keeping it though Hmm
